Checking out the statistical summary after the weekend games. Statistical oddity: our defense got worse even though we didn't play! Probably due to more evenly balance games and some conference games, but we are 119th in Pass Efficency Defense, Total Defense, and Scoring Defense.

It is said football has 3 areas and you need to win two of them to have a good chance of winning: offense, defense, and special teams.

Offense - area and national ranking:

Rushing Offense - 118th

Passing Offense - 3rd

Total Offense - 40th

Scoring Offense - 91st

Defense

Rushing Defense - 104th

Pass Efficiency Defense - 119th

Total Defense - 119th

Scoring Defense - 119th

Special teams

Net Punting - 22nd

Punt Returns - 109th (ugly stat - NT is average 2.5 yards per punt return)

Kickoff Returns - 116th (another ugly number - 15.5 yards per return)

I know the OU game greatly affected these numbers, but I hope the defense and return numbers start to look better in hurry!

No team wins consistently without at least decent defense. That looks like that is going to be the big challenge this year.

You know what's amazing...

...when you start clicking those links on the NCAA site and see that we're 118 in rushing offense, then you look at 119 - Notre Dame! After three games, Notre Dame rushing offense is producing -4.67 per game!

Charlie Weis...offensive genius, eh? And, with three recruiting classes under his belt, most of these are, as some of you all would say, "his players."

-4.67, 100 rushes for -14 yards in three games. If you think we're having a meltdown among the fanbase about our lack of defense, it's hard to imagine what the Fighting Irish fanbase is going through.

I just about fell out of my chair when Rick posted saturday that ND had 79 yards of TOTAL offense. You know the ND fan base is getting a little restless.

Granted, Notre Dame plays a tougher schedule than we do, but really...how do take a former coach of Super Bowl winning QBs, have him sign three recruiting classes, and then in the third year be completely unable to move the ball at all against anyone?

That place is a train wreck. Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops have both turned down job offers for the ND job over the past four or five years. The coaches must know something about that place these days that Charlie Weis didn't know...even though he's an offensive genius.

I guess that last 6-5 season under Tyrone Willingham doesn't look all that bad now? He was the first coach in ND history to win 10 games in his first year only to get the boot two years later. The leadership at ND has earned their plight. I hope they stay there for several years to come.
