Gilmore's status

Josh sent in a good question today about the status of defensive end Eddrick Gilmore.

Gilmore has been in and out of practice all year while taking care of issues away from the field and has fallen pretty far behind the rest of his competition for playing time. It really is too bad. Gilmore is a talented player, one who could help the Mean Green if he ever took advantage of his opportunities to get into practice and learn the system. Remember, some rankings had Gilmore listed among the top 100 players in the state after his senior year.

Gilmore could work his way up the depth chart this year, but he has a long way to go. I just don't see him making an impact considering how far behind he is at this point.

What UNT's coaches have to hope is that Gilmore will perform

Dominique Green, one of two of our best cover guys from the past two years has been here all year, and for whatever reason has been benched? But now after smu and the obvious shortfalls with the defense that were exposed in that game, is being asked to come in and be prepared to work in the rotation?

Another is Devon Cox. Despite not getting his first carry until the 9th game of the season last year he was our third leading rusher that included a 98 yard game against ULaf and averaged 68 yards a game when he rushed the ball. He's been relagated to special teams and is usually one of the first guys down on coverage and has made some great hits so far. Thus I know he loves hitting people, which dispells the thought that he can't block? I don't know, but he hasn't carried the ball yet and that's surprising.

So who knows really why some players are playing and why others aren't?

I don't think the skills it takes to hit someone and the skills it takes to be an effective blocker are the same.
