Wasn't Andrew Smith the deliver-er of a bowl victory over cincy? I vote him...or if it wasn't him, that QB...

BTW, cincy could have beaten Ohio State if they could have just tackled craig krenzel at the 5 yard line on a 4th down play early in the season... they won the nat championship that year in 3 OT's against miami...

Most of you guys probably never even heard of this guy, but Melvin Daniels was a special talent at QB. He played football in Florida and was undefeated as a starter from high school through Junior College (Nassau). He went through Spring Drills in 1997, but failed to pass a class during that semester and failed out before he got a chance to play. He was the starter coming out of Spring ball. If he ever had the chance to play, he would have been great!

With the exception of leaving off Matt Phillips...all of Cooley's list were recruited as QBs and originally given a shot to compete there...the others metntioned, Washington, Stubblefield ect were recruited either as athletes or recievers and DBs

And my vote goes to Hiram Gonzales for throwing a TD at Amon Carter

Our lone offensive highlight that day (minus the touchdown early in the game called back cause of holding).

You have to look at the intangibles (along with talent and stats) when thinking of the best ever. I'll take a winner who lays himself out there on the field, than a kid who can run or pass it for stats.

Stories like that drive me crazy!! I can name off about a dozen similar cases without even thinking about it....all that talent and the kids don't want to put in the effort on their studies or get involved with the wrong crowds. A friend of my brothers was all-district, all-state and Texas Top 100 a few years ago. He signed with A&M and was starting his Sophomore year. He got involved with the wrong crowd and eventually got in enough trouble that he was kicked off the team. Now he's working at Pizza Inn trying to support his girlfriend and baby.

Holy crap, talk about your major turning points in life. They call them "scholarships" for a reason. That means you have to be a scholar, you don't have to be a 4.0 scholar, but just enough of one to keep the coaches and admin happy. If they wanted you to jack around and have your school paid for, they'd call it a "jack-around-and-fail-school-for-free-ship."

I'm glad that our players understand that these scholarships are worth more than the dollar amount per semester that they cover. It's opportunities that some people have to pay hard for, or in some cases, never have.

Also:

I forgot about Hiram Gonzales. Didn't he get a few drives during a senior game a few years back?
