Dodge: UNT will look at cornerback rotation

10:39 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 11, 2007

By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

DENTON – UNT will take a long look at its options at cornerback during its off week, coach Todd Dodge said Tuesday. The Mean Green gave up 353 passing yards in a loss to SMU on Saturday and is allowing an average of 378 yards per game. Sophomore Antoine Bush, junior transfers Latif Nurudeen and Evyn Roman and freshman Kevin Ealey have received significant playing time.

Junior Dominique Green, who started 10 games last season, played some with the Mean Green's starters in practice Tuesday.

"Everybody is getting a look," Dodge said.

Last Saturday I swear I heard the announcer call Brandon Jackson's name on a tackle. I wasn't paying much attention at the time, so I don't know if it was the spotter/announcer screwing up, which isn't out of the question or if it was actually B Jax playing some defense...

Anyone know?

Interception? I kind of doubt that he was actually out there on D. But hell, stranger things have happened!

Sam Dibrell also made a tackle, and Truman Spencer returned the opening kickoff.

The guy did zero research (struggling with several names), and had terrible spotters.

I can't believe nobody has commented on the most important part of this article.

It's about GD time they start looking at Green. Hair is being eaten alive on his side. I don't blame him fully, because I still think the D-Coordinator is the root cause of our issue, but Hair certainly isn't keeping the "spotlight" off himself.

Once Latif locked up a corner spot...I think most of us felt the last corner job would be between Dominique and Antione Bush. Did Green show up out of shape? Or did not looking at any game film last year actually hurt the coaching staff? Perhaps Green doesn't practice well but he was a gamer last season. I really don't care who is opposite Latif though...they're going to need some occassional scheme assistance. I doubt that Dom is going to step in and be a lock down, man-to-man cover guy.

"Hair". I like the nickname. How about, Romair, or Romanair.

Do you really think the coaches have not been looking at all the corners ?? I think you can rest assured that they are putting the players that they think are the best they have on the field. Hopefully ,play will improve no mattter who is on the field.

Note: The game was AT SMU... therefore no one except them or their players really matter according to their opinions. Just expect this to occur.

Game announcer at SMU was terrible. Names were wrong all night? (Brock Strickler and Toby Nawigay) I'm sure Josh Maldonado was happy though... he apparently made about 5 tackles at linebacker. Not bad for a RB who doesnt play defense? It's all good... next game is at home. I could care less about the SMU announcer.

Bring on Schnelly and the Owls... let's see if Danny Meager can throw for 700.

GMG!!!

I'm sure that Josh could have made 5 tackles if they had put him out there. I wonder why they don't give him a shot at running back kick-offs. He's a fearless runner.

Maybe I'm reading between the lines too much, but to say that the coaching staff is "going to look at the options at CB" tells me that we're going to continue playing the same basic man coverage we've seen in the first two games. There are a lot more problems with this defense than the CBs and, unless Deion Sanders or Champ Bailey plan on wearing a Mean Green uniform, we're going to continue to see a porous passing defense if we remain in man coverage 100% of the time. I don't fault the players as much as I fault the defensive schemes and play calling.

How many QB sacks do we have thus far?

Exactly, no pressure on the passer means any defense will be picked apart, man or zone. I also like how man is "simple". Do you think Cover 2 or 3 is rocket science? It's all simple, you just gotta make plays.

No, I like the "our coaches are too dumb to figure anything out" argument better.

Well, when you're not gtting pressure in Cover 1, send one of the 3 LBers you've got floating around the LOS. That should help, right? :pirate: Better than having them cover a slot receiver. :shuriken:

"Hair" - Good name for him. I think I will start using it myself.

So true, so true. NO pressure on the passer is another one. One would think we could get at least SOME pressure to take some pressure off of the CBs.

That's basically the point I was trying to make. Until we start putting pressure on the QB, it doesn't matter who we have playing CB. A zone could help alleviate the problem of the same guy (aka Hair) getting beat every time but, I agree, until we can put some pressure on the QB and limit the amount of time he has to find his receivers, we're going to continue to see lots of points for our opposition. A zone would also allow us to disguise a CB blitz on obvious passing downs w/o allowing a receiver to just run free. Sure that's a gamble, but not any more so than putting your CBs out there on an island.

And, I don't know if your "simple" comment was directed at me....I didn't call man coverage simple...basic yes, simple no...especially when you don't have the athletes to cover. I don't think a zone coverage is the be all, end all but I can tell you what we're doing ain't working!
