Speaking of the PA, is anyone as sick of Bob's Steak and Chophouse as I am?

Come on give Mike Modano a break, but why 37 dollars? Seems like an odd number is there a reason?

Unfortunately, it takes money to run a program and these sponsors have graciously donated to SMU so they are acknowledged in various ways. I have not been to Fouts but I assume you do something similar for your sponsors?

By the way, many of us were not happy with the announcer either. And to my knowledge, he did not graduate from SMU.

Yes, we have several sponsors at Fouts who are announce many, many times during the course of the game.

Also what was that Chicken Leg Dot Race Thing. That was horrible.

I can't mention what the group I was with thought of the race, but it was risqué.

Not as sick of them as the Mustang Realty Third Down and the Horse noises, man I mean I know it's annoying sometimes going to mgs.com and hearing the eagle caw but at least its only once and not looped.

I thought he missed a huge opportunity when their punt pinned us way back on the one. He should have gone 'And now it's time for some first down thunder!'

As for the blood-curdling eagle scream, I can tell you it is disconcerting for first-time visitors to Fouts Field. Though I either got used to it or they stopped doing it cause now I can't recall if they were still doing it last season.

It is like calling a man Chrissy, when his name is Chris. It is too obvious and completely ineffective. I am sure that Chris has heard it a million times before, so he must ignore it.

Or like calling a man Chris when his name is

I don't care if they call us NTSU or Texas Teachers College either and I don't understand why some people get so upset about that. Those were actual names of our university/college and they just do that because they know it pisses some of us off.

This is an honest question....at what point did your university change its name from NTSU? I grew up in Dallas and that is what it was called when I went off to college (granted, I am old). Growing up that is what I knew the name to be. When did it change and what was the reasoning behind the change? Also, I thought your mascot was the eagle, but you also call yourselves "Mean Green"? Is one more correct than the other?

In '88, and because we are THE best school of higher education in North Texas.:)

Here's a couple of links to answer your questions:

History and name changes of North Texas

NT History

Eagle=mascot Mean Green=nickname

Look Under "Traditions" and Mean Green Moniker

Side Note: I find it interesting that in 1922 the eagle was chosen over the lion and the dragon as the mascot. Can you imagine what it would have been like with Dodge arriving, changing the uniforms and NT being called "The Dragons" just like SLC?

Thanks for the info. That is interesting regarding the various names over the years. I can see how it would evolve as the university did. I didn't realize the change from NTSU happened so long ago---especially since I was living in Denton County in 1988. Time flies!

---I have heard that the legislature (House of Representatives actually) had approved changing the name from NTSC to UNT in 1961...... but ... the Senate would not approve it (too many UT grads) and at least one of them said "We have a Univ of Texas and we are not about to have a Univ. of North Texas". They sort of had to eat crow a few years later (1965) when they had were hit by the baby boomers and was hurting to fund colleges properly. The UT-A&M system had far more money than they could reasonably spend and the rest , especially us and Arlington State University was "starving for money. ..... The solution: rename Texas Western and Arlington State and put them into the University lands system as UTEP and UT-Arlington which gave them plenty of money and freed up the funds they were using for us and other state supported colleges.

---It was possible to buy car window stickers at a store near campus when I was at NT in 64-66 that said "University of North Texas". Someone had jumped the gun and printed up a bunch of them ans stilll had some..

---Officially we are Eagles but the athletic teams are usually referred to as the Mean Green. Lots of colleges have double names including Alabama, Notre Dame, and Tulane... sort of.

Bama: Red Elephants or Crimson Tide ----- Notre Dame: Fighting Leprechauns or Irish.... and Tulane uses a Pelican mascot but calls themselves Green Wave.

---Ever noticed that Texas Tech's school song is "Hail to the Matador" but they call themselves Red Raiders (looks like a Picador)..... confused people..... changed the Mascot but not the song.

Actually, we are officially the Mean Green. Our mascot is Scrappy the Eagle. That was the first line of business that RV took care of when he got here. It has been that way for 9 years now - officially. It was even written into a bill for the SA (now called SGA), voted on, and passed. The only team that held onto the nickname of "Eagles" in any way were the Lady Eagles Basketball Team... they held ono Lady Eagles for 4 years but eventually decided to be the Mean Green, just like the rest of the teams... that was in 2004; they joined the other 16 sports by changing their official name to the Mean Green as well. We no longer have a team at North Texas named the Eagles. All of our teams are named the Mean Green. We have a mascot for the school named Scrappy the Eagle and we are represented by the Eagle in logo form - but the name "Eagles" does not exist in the athletic department's eyes anymore. If you go to the main site - www.meangreensports.com (not www.eaglesports.com) - you will read a lot about our teams... You will also see that not one team is named the Eagles and every single article refers to every single team as the Mean Green. The name has changed, there are just a few stubborn alumni that refuse to accept it. They also are proud of their heritage; but for some reason, they do not "get" that 77 other colleges use an Eagle or the name "Eagles" as their team names inthe U.S. - we simply want to be unique and not just another one of those "Eagles" schools. Our last AD tried to mix it up and call us Mean Green Eagles and that was just laughable. We are the Mean Green. Period.

Not really that simple. As long as the eagle logo, eagle shriek and "Fly Like an Eagle" are associated with UNT athletics, we're more than just the name Mean Green. The eagle's subordinate to the Mean Green nickname and we don't call ourselves the Eagles. This might sound unusual to some folks, but it's not that uncommon. An elephant is a minor element of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Oakland A's.
