Everyone is going gaga over Meager and his passing tonight, but what I mainly witnessed were great catches by the WRs. Nearly all of the long passes were under thrown and the WR was forced to sit and wait for the ball to get there. Yes, his numbers were gaudy but they would have been even better if he could just hit the receivers in stride. That is accomplished by throwing the ball to where the receiver will be if he keeps running rather than throwing to where he is when you decide to throw to him.

It's no secret that I'm not a Meager fan, but I vowed to give him a chance this year since TD named him the starter. Yes I know he threw for 601 yards tonight, but I really haven't seen anything from Meager that I haven't seen in the last two years. He still throws behind the receivers, holds on to the ball too long and panics in the pocket.

I haven't seen a whole lot of Vizza but, from what I have seen, he tends to do a better job looking downfield and hitting recievers in stride and he doesn't panic when the pocket starts to collapse.

Also, SMU's defense looked really bad and if they don't get it together they're going to rank higher than us for most points allowed per game.

I will totally agree with this argument. You are dead on. The second we run into a good coverage team deep is the second that we can't recover from those god awful false start penalties.

No, you are not the only one that saw that. In fact, I stated in another thread tonight, that Meager is not our guy. Whatever it is, Meager doesn't have it. I could care less if a guy passes for 1000 yards with an 80% completion record through 3 quarters, if your team is in a tight game, and you throw 3 picks in the fourth quarter, I don't want you as my QB. When Meager is under pressure, he can't and doesn't perform. Period.

No, you are not the only one that saw that. In fact, I stated in another thread tonight, that Meager is not our guy. Whatever it is, Meager doesn't have it. I could care less if a guy passes for 1000 yards with an 80% completion record through 3 quarters, if your team is in a tight game, and you throw 3 picks in the fourth quarter, I don't want you as my QB. When Meager is under pressure, he can't and doesn't perform. Period.

Until I can run my own QB camp and engineer the biggest passing game in UNT history in my second game as head coach, I'll defer to the judgment of someone who has done such things.

He was all over the place, that stutter pump he does is like he is telegraphing the defense which receiver he was about to hit. He had some really good passes. But his release still tends to be slow and his decision making is even worse unless he does not have to decide.

His receivers made him look much better then he is. There were some incredible catches tonight.

He had all day to pass in some cases, and still made some bad decisions. He could have figured out the meaning of life sometimes, and still have chosen the wrong thing to do in many cases.

BTW, WTF was up with not reviewing or challenging the catch where i swear their WR's knee hit the ground in the backfield after the catch?

I'm very certain TD did everything he could to get the refs to review that play. If you remember, he called a time-out to discuss that play with the refs. I know this is his first year as a college HC, but surely he knows the review procedures? If they would have reviewed that play, and overturned it, we would have gotten our TO back. For whatever reason, it appears the officials chose not to review that play.

I know he did, he looked pissed off too, that they weren't even going to look at it.

I saw more fire out of that O-line coach after those dumb ass penalties. It's nice to have people that give a shit. Our O-line played really well tonight for the most part (side from the crucial penalties).

Meager just doesn't have it. Forget his stats, if it wasn't for the guys catching those balls his stats would have sucked. I honestly thinks he picks a guy to throw to before the snap, no matter if he's open or not. He doesn't understand checking off. Then, the 3 picks killed us. I'm all for Vizza. I gave DM a shot but after 3 years, he just isn't that great. Can him.

How can you hang this loss on a quarterback who threw for 601 yards? I caught this game on radio, not in person, but it sounded to me like the keys to the loss were our secondary play on defense and too many penalties. Daniel Meager and Casey Fitzgerald had one of the best offensive games in school history. If that's not enough to rack up a W, I'd look elsewhere for the blame.

You've got to be kidding me.

Yes, there were great catches by the WR's (mainly Fitz and B-Jac), but did you choose to ignore the passes that were thrown precisely where only the WR could catch them....and in tight coverage? On some of those long passes it was very clear that DM was showing confidence that Fitz and B-Jac could beat his man for the ball. But don't we see that all the time with all-conference (and all-pro) QB's throwing to their best (and most competitive) receivers?

I saw less nervousness in the pocket on the part of DM than I ever seen. Any time he ran, it was because he had no other option and/or it was a designed play. You've also made the decision to ignore that touchdown pass that DM threw with a DE in his face.

If DM had had some help from the defense, we would be celebrating our second victory in a row over SMU and the first of many victories for Todd Dodge.

Everyone that says that Meager threw for 601 yards because he made the right plays is right

The problem is it could of been a lot better, many times he found the wide open reciever across the middle or down the sideline and made the right throw, only problem was the ball was underthrown and instead of the reciever catching it in stride, he had to slow down to catch it, and once he did he was able to be caught and tackled. I can think of at least three or four times off the top of my head that this happend:

Fitz's long pass across the middle that he almost jucked everybody for the touchdown anyway, but a good ball and he would of walked into the endzone,

I beleive Fitz's TD catch accross the middle late where he was wide open, we still scored but there was no one within 7 yards of him, and he had to stop to completely, and turn his back to the endzone to catch it, fortunalty he was on the two so he was still able to get into the endzone.

On Meager's frist fourth quarter INT, the reciever had the man beat going into the endzone and if the ball would have been thrown to back corner we could of just ran under it and taken a 7 point lead late, but instead it was underthrown and the defender had time to catch up and make the INT

And one last one that I can remeber without thinking to much was the last long reception by Fitz's down the sideline where he had the man beat again, but had to slow up and make a circus catch instead of catching it instride and waltzing into the endzone.

Now this is four prime examples that I know of without thinking to much, couple these with the fact that evertime the pressure was on Meager folded like a house of cards, presents a big problem. That problem has been that Meager has showed the falling apart for the past three years, do we really think this tiger is going to change his strips???

Now that we have two weeks to get ready, and followed by a home game, I hope TD sees that Meager is just not cut out to be a big time QB and deciedes to turn it over to the Freshman and lets see what the kid's got against frist team defesenses when the game is on the line, and what he can do in pressure situations.

I’m not sure I was at the same game as some of you. I saw the most yards, the most completions and the most attempts by a quarterback in the history of North Texas. I wasn’t around for Steve Ramsey, but out doing him has to be a feat. I did watch Jordan Case and he never had a game like this!

And this is with a few weeks of spring practice and a few weeks of fall camp. Dodge can certainly brought out something DD never did in Daniel.

There it is...the voice of reason. THANK YOU. Danny played one of the best games I have ever seen by a NT QB. I dont know what we do about the panic at the end of the game, but he showed me he has talent and heart... I admit I am also a Vizza backer, but you cant lay last night on Danny Meager. He played his ass off and laid everything he had on that SMU defense.

I'll take that QB ANY day!

I agree w/everyone else on this topic. Meager only threw for 601 yards & broke pretty much all the school records last night. That guy could have easily thrown for 700 yards last night if he was on his game. Also, he could have broken the all-time NCAA passing record in one game if he was a decent QB. But he didn't. My position is if Meager can't throw for 800+ yards a game & 7-8 TD's we need to bench him immediately.

In fact, I say bench Meager & put in Ditka. Ditka would have thrown for 1000 yards on that horrible SMU secondary! Also, Ditka wouldn't even have needed an offensive line to block for him as he could scramble away from the defense all by himself. I say Ditka 104 SMU 45.

Come on we can not bash Meager due to his failures in crunch time. Follow the lead of the elders and praise Meager and bash the defense for giving up 45 points. Looks like nobody can have an opinion different than many of the "MEAN GREEN" faithful. Incredible game last night and the defense did have two critical holds that were thrown away due to the late game meltdown.

DM's 46-64 for 600+ yards passing was fantastic. Everyone could tell that "someone" has been tutoring him along with the receivers. Meager was consistantly throwing the ball only where his receivers could make the catch then having the receivers make a play. One of the comments by coach stoops to his redshirt qb this year was, "get the ball in the hands of the playmakers." That is what Meager was doing consistantly. Meager's footwork on the field looked as though he was ready for dancing with the stars or he was imitating Mohamed Ali --- float like a butterfly & sting like a bee. DM was definitely looking at most of his receivers and "not" had his mind made up, prior to the snap, who he as going to throw to. If "C-Fitz" is consistantly getting open most of the night get the ball to him so he can make the play. This may not happen for every game but "C-Fitz" gave the SMU corner "fits" all night. How would you like to be burned for 300+ yards in one game?? Of course when you throw 64 times in one game intangibles are going to happen like offensive line breakdown, missed assignments, interceptions and dropped passes. having three interceptions when you throw 64 times, to me, does not seem too unreasonable at this early stage of dodgeball. Coach Dodge already stated that our situation will "only" get "better" and it will. For those of us who attended the game, definitely, we saw a different game than those who listened. For us to attended we saw a great deal of confidence and a winning program that will happen under dodgeball, period.

Got to agree that our defense needs to step up and like the oklahoma game our corners still looked a little soft against SMU but our "d-line" looked really good. We all know our coaches are working on improving the "d."

Let's pack the house on Yom Kippur......that is on September 22.......make sure ya'll wear your green skull caps to the game.

Yeah, he really crumbled when he rallied the team to two fourth quarter touchdowns. REALLY crumbled when he led the team on a 99-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to a game-tying touchdown. Yeah, he really crumbled there.

Yes, he made mistakes. The last two interceptions were bad passes. But in his SECOND game in this system - HIS SECOND GAME IN A COMPLETELY NEW SYSTEM - after two ego-crushing years in the old system, Meager put up a fantastic game. And some people want to bench him. Ridiculous.

And since Todd Dodge knows more about quarterbacking than the combined brains of every person on this board, forgive me if I trust him to put the best quarterback on the field. If he says it's Meager, then it's Meager. You want to tell him he's wrong? Go ahead. Email him. Pick up the phone. Tell him he's wrong. But the morning after one of the greatest aerial displays in school history, I'm sticking with him. And Meager.

I like the "UNDERTHROW" arguement. I wished those who are complaining about the "UNDERTHROWS" would have made their way over near my section so that they could turn to Scott Hall and complain to him about all of his underthrows he lobbed to Johnny Quinn htat we so learned to love all those years.

This offense throws to the reciever that is in space. It's not always going to be a zinger but at times a lob. TD coaches that. I watched Riley do it in three games last year.

It's funny, Sam Bradford threw 20 completions last week against us and he's stunningly perfect. DM more than doubles that last night and he's just not the guy to get it done?

It is absolutley ridiculous to lay this loss on Meager. The TEAM lost the game not any one player. Meager played his a$$ of along with every other player on our team. Dodge expects no less. We witnessed one of the greatest offensive displays in school history and everyone wants to focus on Meager's interceptions as the reason for the loss. How about Kelvin Drake snapping the ball three miles all the way back to the 26 yard line. Want to bench him? How about Fitz dropping a sure touchdown when we are up 14-3. Want to bench him? SMU's punter had a better average than Spencer. How about we bench him. Mendoza didn't run his pick back for a touchdown like SMU did. He should ride the pine for sure. Give these guys a chance. We wouldn't have even been in position to win if it weren't for Meagers play to get us to that point. The loss hurts but let's all step back and take a dose of reality. The entire team lost this game and I assure you that they will be working for the next 2 weeks to correct their mistakes and improve. Watch out FAwho because their will be some angry Eagles that come down upon you at Fouts Field.

I believe we should celebrate "Dodge Ball" in week two. It was not only resiant....exciting....record setting. I know we didn't win. I not hear to bash. But, when is the last time that a crowd stood and clapped for our team when we lost!

I am so pumped...I can't wait for two weeks. EVERYONE is going to get better and better....
