70 cars burglarized in Denton

Vehicles at 4 apartment complexes targeted in one night of break-ins

By DONNA FIELDER / Denton Record-Chronicle

A day after burglars swarmed through four Denton apartment complex parking lots, breaking windows and stripping available property out of 70 vehicles, police had few leads to follow, a sergeant said.

They took “everything from loose change to car stereos,” said Detective Sgt. Brad Curtis. “We don’t have an estimate yet on the dollar amount, but there has to be between $6,000 and $10,000 in broken windows alone.”

Sgt. Curtis said he believes the criminals hit the complex lots between 1 and 4 a.m. Thursday. Vehicle owners from the Coventry Apartments in the 500 block of South Interstate 35E, Oak Meadows at 1804 Teasley Lane, The Ridge in the 2700 block of Colorado Boulevard, and Campus Park at 1541 Meadow St. reported burglaries.

“Every one of them was along the I-35 corridor,” Sgt. Curtis said. “I’m pretty sure they’re all going to be related.”

The sergeant said he did not know why the four complexes were selected for the crimes or how the burglars chose the vehicles they broke into. Most were locked, he said. Investigators still are working to determine whether the burglaries could be connected to similar large burglary sweeps in Fort Worth recently.

Sgt. Curtis said no witnesses had come forward. With that many windows breaking, he’s hoping someone saw something they did not realize was criminal behavior at the time, he said.

Saying he took the break-ins personally, Sgt. Curtis said the police were working hard to solve the case.

“That’s what we do,” he said. “I’m going to work it and stay on it until I just think there isn’t any further I can go.”

Anyone with information should call Denton police at 940-349-8181 or call Denton County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-388-TIPS (8477). Callers will remain anonymous.

pretty easy to see why they were targeted a bunch of college kids who have no clue whats going on leaving valuables exposed in their cars in area where a bunch of low life thugs love to hang around. That stretch from Teasley to Ft Worth Dr. to Dallas DR to I-35 is a crime haven with all the apartments and low rent properties.

and Campus Park at 1541 Meadow St. reported burglaries.

Between being escorted out of the area for my safety by the SWAT team, the few almost-fights in the courtyard across the drive, the general slum-like qualities of the low-income surrounds, and now this, I'm glad I got the eff out of there. Hell, I'm glad nothing happened during the year I lived there.
