Long shots made Dolphins roster

BEATING THE ODDS

Patrick Cobbs and Edmond Miles, long shots to make the Dolphins' opening day roster, were among a handful who found out their play during training camp had been rewarded.

Miles, an undrafted rookie linebacker from Iowa, said Monday he called home to tell his mother the news. Once she received it, her screams of joy were overwhelming.

''I couldn't hear anything because of the screaming in the background,'' Miles said. ``My family is very happy for me. My girlfriend is happy. I have a lot of support out there.''

Cobbs, the Dolphins' fourth running back, said he knows his spot on the roster is a precarious one, so don't expect him to get too confident. Cobbs will be asked to play special teams, and he said he's eager to improve.

''I was excited, but it was short-lived,'' said Cobbs, who played in three games with Miami last year. ``The league changes every day. You have to get better every day to stay here.''

One of the big surprises was the release of fullback Cory Schlesinger, who spent 12 seasons with Detroit. Schlesinger signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in March.

Miami plans to use rookie Reagan Mauia instead.
