NT vs OU Thoughts

Now everyone should know why DD's defense played so soft at the corners.

I don't think I have ever seen anyone as overmatched as NT's corners against those OU receivers.

NT stopped the runs up the middle, now to work on the pass and outside runs.

Those critical of Meager should have to suit up against OU next time.

Cox played a good game on special teams.

NT fans should lay off Utah State. (Likewise every other team in the NCAA)

Those that think that NT's poor defense was just a function of lack of talent should reconsider.

That extra 5 yards on kickoffs did not seem to bother OU.

Fitzgerald is the real deal.

Those that think OU ran up the score, grow up.

This was a horrible defeat, I don't care how you spin it.

What would the score have been if the team, in TD's termonology, turned colors?

TD and staff were taught a lesson they will learn from.

The game was all a plot to get SMU overconfident.

As hard as it is to believe, according to the TV announcers "team speed" was a factor.

I don't like the new uniforms

I agree with every single thing on this list, to one degree or another. I even agree that Meager deserves a break... he struggled and made some mistakes, but though he has a lot of work still to do, this was not as discouraging as the Meager of old. I'm not on board with him yet, but I was glad to hear Dodge say in the post-game that he plans to start Meager next week. That's something that I never thought I would be happy to hear, but I do think the guy handled himself better than I expected against OU.

I'd give the corners a little bit of a break... I think Roman just had a terrible game and will hopefully grow and bounce back from the experience. And I think that the uniforms aren't perfect... but at least they're not something worse. I would be willing, even happy to accept the uniforms as-is if it came with a binding guarantee that I wouldn't have to see any discussion of them for at least 24 months.

And I think you're joking about this being a plot to make SMU overconfident... though I do hope they get run down and worn out on Monday, then think they have an easy game ahead of them because of our score. It'll make it that much easier to get the win I expect in their house.

Great post.

I agree with most of what you say also, but I still have problems with Meager as I always have. Hangs on to the ball too long and doesn't seem to have enough of a downfield mentality. Seems a bit slow in his decision making. I like his potential to make something happen with his legs against a lesser team, but it was not to happen tonight. I have to say that I'm in the Vizza camp now because I think he's more likely to make things happen in this offense. I also have to add the safeties in with the corners in your slamming of our defense. The safeties were no where to be found when our corners were continually beaten down the sidelines.

Leaving our corners on an island all game long. Pretty much Man coverage it seemed 90% of the time.

I thought I could give Meager another chance too...but I just can't...especially after liking what I saw of Vizza. Sure he threw a couple of picks but what QB doesn't throw a pick when they are down by 40+ points and trying to make something happen. Meager was much better than he was with DD and he was under a lot of pressure. However, I still saw the same old Meager...running backwards 20 yards and then heaving the wounded duck to the drop back for a two-yard loss. He holds on to the ball too damn long and he's gun-shy. Vizza didn't have any more time than Meager did and yet he managed to look downfield and complete the pass.

Now, about our defense, I remember reading a quote from one of the OU receivers regarding watching SLC game film. He said something about how SLC ran a lot of man coverage and it looked like they would point out who was covering who just before the ball was snapped. He went on to say that they welcomed that type of coverage on Saturday. I'd say he got his wish. We can't play man coverage against superior athletes. Hell, no one can. You can't even do that in flag football and expect to be successful. I think and hope we learned that valuable lesson.
