North Texas Takes Its Season Opener 2-0 Against TWU

DENTON, Tex. (8/31/07) – In the first game of the season it was a night of seconds for the North Texas women’s soccer team. Powered by Gennifer Hurst and Veronica Ayala’s first half goals the Mean Green (1-0) got past TWU 2-0 at the North Texas Soccer Field.

The tallies by Ayala and Hurst are the second career goals for both players. It a very defensive game, North Texas outshot the Pioneers 24-3 but TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent made 13 saves on the night to keep things close.

“They made it very tough on us tonight but you have to give their keeper some credit because she played extremely well tonight,” said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.

Ayala scored the first goal of the night on a service from Kendall Juett. The pass came off a free kick 25 yards out that Ayala deflected past Vincent to make it 1-0 North Texas. Hurst added the second goal of the night for the Mean Green in the 27th minute of play on a loose ball in the box.

TWU had its best scoring chance in the 36th minute of play when Natalie Grant was stopped by North Texas keeper Kandice Ellis from 10 yards out. Ellis made three saves on the night to notch her 13th career shutout, which moves her into second place all-time at North Texas.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday when as they host UTEP at 1 p.m. at the North Texas Soccer Field.

Juett's Two Goals Lift North Texas Past UTEP 4-3

DENTON, Tex. (9/2/07) – With the game on the line and tied late in the match, sophomore Kendall Juett took control. Juett scored two goals in the final seven minutes to break open a 2-2 tie against UTEP to power the Mean Green (2-0) to a 4-3 victory at the North Texas Soccer Field.

"This was a very good win early in the season, UTEP is a solid team picked fourth to finish in CUSA and one of the better teams in the region" said North Texas head coach John Hedlund.

After letting a 2-0 lead slip away in the second half, North Texas was back on its heels in the final ten minutes against the Miners. That’s when Juett came to the rescue. First in the 83rd minute Christie Stewart was taken down in the UTEP (1-1) box for a penalty kick. Juett nailed the shot in the top left corner to regain the lead for North Texas at 3-2.

Just two minutes later Brittney Cleveland found Janaye Woods on the outside for a break. Woods got around the UTEP defender and fed the ball across to Juett for a deflection in for her second goal of the game.

UTEP did not go away quietly however as Tameka Sumter cut the Mean Green lead to 4-3 with 87 seconds left off a header. North Texas held off one final UTEP rally to win in a clash of regional powers.

North Texas scored to first half goals, the first coming from Cleveland off a corner kick from Juett. The second goal was put home by Woods, the first of her career, on a loose ball in the UTEP box. The Miners tied the game up in the second half with two goals in 13 minutes until Juett was able to put the game away for North Texas.

Juett finished the day with five points while Woods and Cleveland both had three.

North Texas is 2-0 to start the season for the second straight year.

The Mean Green is back in action on Friday, September 7 against Lamar in Natchitoches, La.
