Practice news and notes

North Texas appears to be getting a better handle on where all of its players will fit in terms of starters, backups and potential redshirt candidates for the upcoming season.

Daniel Meager will start at quarterback and a few of the other spots on the depth chart are starting to be solidified. Head coach Todd Dodge said Wednesday that Deavin Cox would be the Mean Green's backup running back behind Jamario Thomas and Thomas Moreland is still leading the kicking battle.

One of the more interesting comments Dodge made was about the progress of Micah Mosley. The freshman running back is making a big impression in practice and could push for playing time this season.

Dodge said he has yet to make any firm decisions on who will redshirt. Those calls could be put off until well into the season when UNT will have a better idea of its injury situation.

In other news and notes ...

Senior Josh Alexander was back at practice in street cloths. Dodge said the former tackle would serve as a student assistant coach working with UNT's offensive linemen. Alexander had to give up the game because of a knee injury.

Tackle Robert Peachey is still out and Jamario Thomas only ran conditioning and agility drills in the afternoon practice session.

Defensive back Noel Luna intercepted a pass in team drills. ... B.J. Lewis and Casey Fitzgerald both caught touchdown passes in drills. Sam Dibrell and Sam Roberson made impressive grabs on deep passes.

From the mail bag ...

I received a question in e-mail today on how wide receivers Marcus King and Evan Walker are doing in practice. King is back from what turned out to be a minor knee injury and is looking better. I mentioned a little earlier that he made a good play on a deep ball today. Walker has also done some good things. I think both are on the bubble when it comes to make UNT's rotation of its top eight receivers.

Be sure to pick up a copy of tomorrow's paper. There will be a feature on Daniel Meager's unexpected rise to the starting quarterback job at UNT this season and a few other notes.

So...what has happened to Cam Montgomery??? It looks like he has fallen off the radar!?

From what I can recall, he had a decent Spring...anyone know what the deal is?

I can't remember, did Mr. Cox practice during the spring? If so, wasn't he slowed by an injury?

I think that three things are going on.

1. Mr. Cox is healthy again, and everyone's forgotten how good he was when he was healthy.

2. Mosley is better than everyone thought he would be.

3. Mr. Montgomery may have leveled off in his development.
