Breaking news -- Meager to start

UNT head coach Todd Dodge named Daniel Meager the Mean Green's starting quarterback after practice today.

Dodge said freshman Giovanni Vizza would be the Mean Green's backup. Check back on the blog and pick up a copy of tomorrow's paper for more on Dodge's decision.

WE'RE ALL DAMNED!!! SAVES YOURSELVES!!!

Just Kidding...I am glad we now know who it will be. That is great, he is the most experienced after all.

Meager will surprise alot of us this year. Give the young man a break. He just went from two years of Flanigan to Dodge....kind of like dumping Roseanne Barr for Heidi Klum!

I am guessing Vito will no longer be in the loop on getting information from Dodge unless he wanted this information to be leaked after stating last week he was waiting until Week 1. Well lets hope DM has perfected the shot gun snap by now. ;)

I am very happy for Daniel Meagar, and for Coach Dodge making

a difficult decision. The team has what, 2 weeks to prepare for

a tough opening game with zero-u. I am sure there are several

more positions where a starter will be named soon. This team

must begin practicing with the "starters" daily to be running on

the same page, tune up the offensive system, and for the

"starters' to gel together.

I also believe the "G-man" will be getting ready to play too. If

he is the back-up, he is just one play away from starting, or taking

over in a game.

Now, Coach Dodge can put together the remaining starters

for the OL and WR's.

For the defense, I think there are more questions to be answered

regarding starters and back up's. I hope this puzzle can be solved

quickly also.

Well...it is on the NT Athletics website as well...

The decision makes sense to me, for reasons I posted a few days ago. And for all we know, DM may have reverted to the form he had in HS that made him so highly regarded. He may have been able to do that in a system that gave him what he needed to progress. I trust TD's judgment.

Well, not to take a shot at Dickey ... ok .. I will make one.

I am just happy that Dodge made a damn decision and we don't have the first 6 games to "see which one steps up and takes the job." That didn't ever work out for Dickey in the 8 years he tried it.

Daniel has gotten the nod from the man Mack Brown recently described as the best QB coach in Texas. He didn't say the best mid-major QB coach, or the best high school QB coach, but the best QB coach in Texas.

That's all the endorsement anyone should need.

Wha? Put down the pipe...

cool did not check the athletic site. Guess the staff can not make up their minds if they want public to know or not know what is going on with the football team. Oh well time to get ready for zero-U

I'm pleased with this decision for purely football reasons and certainly not because I just got through making a Daniel Meager computer wallpaper (in eight sizes), avatar, and cell phone wallpaper (in seven sizes).

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead this offense as we get ready to start the season,” Meager said. “I know that the competition is not over and I still have to go out there and perform, but it is nice knowing that Coach Dodge has the confidence that I can go out there and get the job done.”

This is not highlighted to be negative, and anyone that knows me knows I am a Meager fan, BUT I don't think we have seen the last of Giovanni Vizza... this season

Lets go MEAN GREEN!

Congrats to DM. I suspect that he'll show a little more poise back in the pocket when he (hopefully) doesn't have twenty guys bullrushing the backfield this year. We also might benefit by the fact that he and the returning receivers are more familiar with each others movements than they are at this point with GV. Don't want a two QB system by any means, but I hope we are able to get a pretty good look at GV this year as a backup. Without injury of course!

Well, there goes our surprise advantage over Ou. I'm sure the Ou coaches are now scrambling trying to find some DM game tape to change their whole defense with. Seriously, I think this was the safe selection. As first backup, Vizza still needs to get into the game to get some experience. You don't want him forced into a game without having some exposure. I say both will play.
