Football practice news and notes

Andrew Smith's No. 12 jersey is going to stay off the field at North Texas after all. The details will be in tomorrow's paper, so be sure to pick up a copy or check out our Web site late tonight. For those of you out there who are new to the program, Smith was the quarterback who led UNT to the Sun Belt Conference title and a win over Cincinnati in the 2002 New Orleans Bowl. He died in a car accident before the 2004 season.

In other news ...

Head coach Todd Dodge said he will stick to his vow to pick a starting quarterback after today's scrimmage. Just don't hold your breath waiting to hear an announcement. Dodge said he will tell his players but keep his choice a secret from the rest of the world until the Oklahoma game.

Jamario Thomas missed the second session of two-a-days on Thursday and was in shorts Friday after his hamstring acted up. Considering Jamario's hamstring has given him fits for years, it was not an encouraging sign. He is expected to play today, though.

Everyone is expected to be available for today's scrimmage with the exception of tackle Robert Peachey. The sophomore is still dealing his own hamstring issues.

Argyle's Victor Gill has moved to tackle from tight end. The switch is one that was talked about for years and has finally become a reality.

Wide receiver Brock Stickler continued to be impressive in practice on Friday.

Sam Dibrell made a nice catch on a touchdown pass from Giovanni Vizza.

By the way, today's 9 a.m. scrimmage is still closed to the public.

Follow-up in today's DRC

Smith's No. 12 will not be used

Dodge has changed his stance on using the No. 12 worn by former UNT quarterback Andrew Smith.

Dodge originally gave the number to Sam Roberson, a freshman wide receiver from Somerville. Roberson wore No. 85 at practice on Friday, while former Argyle standout Victor Gill switched from No. 85 to No. 64.

Gill has made the move from tight end to tackle.

"I have talked with the Smith family and gotten to know them," Dodge said. "I am honoring the wishes of the family for now to keep the No. 12 off the field and honor the memory of the late Andrew Smith."

Smith led UNT to a win over Cincinnati in the 2002 New Orleans Bowl. He was killed in a car accident on his way to Denton for the beginning of fall practice before the beginning of the 2004 season.

I hope Peachey can return soon. As I feel he could be one of are top Oline men this season.

This is really discouraging news. It seemed that in the early part of Summer workouts we were hearing lots of positive things about Jamario's health as well as performance on the field.

I'm hoping for the best, but this was not the kind of thing I wanted to read about.
