"High school football is one of the purest forms of entertainment," said Ronnie Tipps, athletic director for the Carroll ISD. "It just irritates me that [gambling] drifts down to the high school level."

Among the best of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves stories is "The Purity of the Turf," in which Bertie Wooster and friends can't get to the track for some reason or other, so they decide to bet on local school kids in the annual field day events (three-legged race, etc.).

They start scouting in advance and handicap the children based on size, weight, and behavior. Of course, they also try to rig the events to cash in. And, of course, it all goes horribly wrong and they lose everything.

Thankfully, we reserve such hijinks for NBA refs.

I don't have a problem with sports betting---unless it's in a case like this, where the players involved receive no kind of monetary compensation (from any party) for their time and effort. Let's keep gambling on pro sports, shall we?
