Practice notes

There will be a story in tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle about Giovanni Vizza and his reaction to the news that head coach Todd Dodge's son Riley is headed to UNT next season. Until then, here are a few notes from practice.

Punter Truman Spencer was one of a few players who kicked off in drills on Thursday and looked like he has the strongest leg of the contenders for the job.

Desmon Chatman, who recently moved from cornerback to safety, made a nice play and intercepted a pass in team drills.

Freshman wide receiver Breece Johnson had another good day of practice and made a nice touchdown catch in goal line drills.

Redshirt freshman guard Esteban Santiago was impressive in one-on-one pass rushing drills.

Senior defensive end Jeremiah Chapman made a nifty spin move in pass rushing drills to sail into the backfield and later blew past backup tackle Adam Venegas.

UNT struggled at times with the shotgun snap in practice. Sophomore Kelvin Drake misfired on two snaps in a row before a third got away from quarterback Daniel Meager.

Freshman running back Micah Mosley broke a pair of long runs while working with UNT's backups in team drills.

Senior wide receiver Brandon Jackson caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Meager.

Regarding center snaps, what if Johnson started as a freshman? He is used to the shotgun snap from the system his high school ran and looked nearly flawless in the THSCA game recently. Then we could put Drake and Rose at guard with Santiago and Peachey at tackle.

      Dept. of Education says Title IX applies to payments to athletes (NIL)

      At one point, it was indicated that NIL would be limited to the actual amount someone’s “name, image or likeness” is really worth: which is not very much at all if it is not “pay for play”. Like, how much would you really pay for someone to retweet a local HVAC ad or show up to an elementary school to read to the kids: maybe a couple hundred bucks or a few thousand max? The players would get their revenue share from the school, but NIL would be capped at true market value. This is heading towards collective bargaining. Wish we could just skip ahead to that part and get a system in place with rules that could be played by and enforced.
