Josh Alexander update

There has been some talk the last few days about the status of senior offensive tackle Josh Alexander for fall practice.

According to a UNT official, what head coach Todd Dodge said during Sun Belt Conference Media Days still holds. Alexander will be on the field for practice when it begins on Monday.

Alexander did suffer a setback in his rehabilitation a few days ago while going through offseason conditioning drills. That injury will not prevent him from at least getting on the field. What is still questionable is how effective Alexander will be while playing on an injured knee that kept him out all of last season.

Alexander is just what UNT could use at left tackle while playing in Dodge's spread offense. The former Fort Worth Southwest standout is big at 6-3, 295, and athletic enough to take on defensive ends who specialize in getting to the quarterback. Alexander didn't allow a sack in 2005.

UNT could rotate Alexander in on a limited basis early in the season if he is healthy enough to play, but at this point it is looking more and more like redshirt freshman Matt Menard will start the season as UNT's left tackle at Oklahoma.

He was already injured in drills. This is not a good sign for his health or the Mean Green team. If he is already getting hurt before a more strenuous, hard hitting gametime situation, he needs to stop playing football and take care of himself and his future. He doesn't want to end up with a permanent physical disability. After all, football is just a silly game.

It could be a long season for whoever is at QB.

And another reason we should all be guarded with our expectation in T'odge's 1's season in Denton.

And FWIW.........if we were to win the SBC and go bowling this season (which would be a tall order in light of the last 2 seasons), an even taller order would be that we do it (at least) as a Top 40 (hey, I'm a baby boomer & descendent of Top 40 song surveys); anyway, if we go bowling this Fall, that we do so as a school ranked inside the Top 40. The WAC and MAC have been sending Top 25 teams to bowl games and the SBC should very, very soon start doing the same (IMHO, of course).
