Release: 07/09/2007

NEW ORLEANS - ESPN college football analyst and former Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky head coach Bill Curry will be the guest speaker at this year’s Sun Belt Conference football media days. The two day event begins the afternoon of Monday, July 23 and concludes at noon on Tuesday, July 24. Curry is slated to speak on Tuesday morning.

Curry joined ESPN in 1997 as a college football game analyst. His primary assignment is the ESPN2 College Football Saturday Night telecast (with Dave Barnett and analyst David Norrie), along with selected bowl games. In 2006, Curry accepted a position at Baylor School as head of their leadership program.

Prior to ESPN, Curry spent 17 years (1980-96) as a head coach in the college ranks, accumulating a 79-98-4 record at Georgia Tech (1980-86), Alabama (1987-89) and Kentucky (1990-96). He led Alabama to the 1989 SEC title (shared with Auburn and Tennessee) and was the recipient of numerous honors, including ACC Coach of the Year (1985), SEC Coach of the Year (1987 & ’89), and the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year (1989).

Prior to his first head coaching assignment, Curry spent three seasons in the NFL (1977-79) as an assistant coach to Bart Starr with the Green Bay Packers. Curry played professionally from 1965 to 1974 with the Packers (under legendary head coach Vince Lombardi), Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams. He earned All-Pro honors at center with the Colts in 1971 and 1972.

A 1965 Georgia Tech graduate with a degree in industrial management, Curry also starred for the Yellow Jackets football squad from 1963-64.

The 2007 SBC Football Media Days will take place July 23-24 at the Hilton St. Charles in downtown New Orleans. The head coach and a top player from each of the conference’s eight football playing schools will be in attendance.

The pre-season all-Sun Belt team and coaches preseason poll will be announced at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23, and the opening day concludes with an evening reception for all participants at New Orleans’ famous Rock ‘n Bowl.

Commissioner Wright Waters will open the proceedings on Tuesday, July 24 with a 9:00 a.m. press conference followed by New Orleans Bowl President Paul Valteau. Each head coach and player will be available to all media from 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

All events and announcements will be covered extensively on sunbeltsports.org. The Sun Belt Conference website will also feature video interviews.

Media seeking credentials should contact Sun Belt Associate Commissioner Todd Stewart (504-299-9066).

Is this sun belt media day for the sun belt school.... or is it to glorify Bill Curry.

Because reading this media release makes me think this event is all about this guy who has practically nothing to do with the SBC.

Agree. It's like they are trying to appeal to the Southern media... SBC = SEC-lite?

possible new uni reveal? maybe? no? eh?

Since it's just one player, they'll probably wear a Mean Green golf shirt (or a suit to show up the other schools). The UNT Media Day usually sees the team in their jerseys so the reporters know who to stick a camera and mic in front of. I figure it'll either be the NT Media Day or the Kick-off Cook-out in August so the kids and fans know who to ask for autographs and whatnot.

Nobody on earth cares anything about glorifying Bill Curry. He's just a rubber-chicken-circuit speaker getting the typical pumping-up.

Remember, too, that ESPN is probably underwriting his appearance fee and expenses, so the SBC pumps up ESPN as part of a package deal.

Also, ESPN is the broadcaster for this year's Dec. 22 NO Bowl, at which a certain SBC team, TBD, will play a certain CUSA team, TBD.

So this has slightly more to do with the SBC than might meet the eye.

But keep in mind that just as nobody on earth cares anything about glorifying Bill Curry, the SBC media day is unlikely to draw much more than some hometown booster media and some stringers for the nationals.

So don't hold your breath for new unis or the naming of the starting QB.

Or an announcement of our new gameday traditions.

Just imagine John Lennon if he'd been a Mean Greener may have sung it: "No new stadium news, too?":rolleyes:
