Swimming & diving: Mitchell joins UNT as diving coach

08:21 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Summer Mitchell has joined the North Texas swimming and diving team as its diving coach, head coach Joe Dykstra announced Tuesday.

Mitchell was a Big Ten champion at Michigan State in the 1-meter dive before transferring to Texas, where she won a Big 12 title in the 3-meter dive before graduating in 2003.

Mitchell was a two-time All-American.

She is still diving competitively and is expected to compete in the USA Diving National Championships in August.

Mitchell has been a high school and club coach since 2003.

“I am very excited about Summer joining our staff this fall,” Dykstra said. “She has been one of the best divers in the country over the past six years, and her knowledge of the sport is remarkable.”

The coaching caliber at UNT seems to getting better and better. Every coaching addition or replacement, except softball, seems to be anywhere from a step up to a jump. And, who knows? We may see dramatic improvement in the softball program. Coach Hubbard may just need the opportunity. He needs a couple of years to recruit some talent before we start passing judgment.

I agree, let's give T J the chance to turn our softball program into a winner...he needs at least two years to get a handle on that...BUT, the diving coach hire does look like a good one indeed. I wonder...will she continue to coach youth team programs? I bet she does...probably makes more money there than being the UNT diving coach. I know youth soccer coaches in select programs make very good money these days...heck, when I was a club president a few years back, we were paying $1,000/month per team for a guy to coach up to four teams...I hear the rate has gone up considerably since then (about 10 years ago for me). If youth club diving coaches get anywhere near that, she will probably keep it up...no problem for me. May lead to better divers for UNT. Looks like another good hire by Rick V. Yep, looks like an upgrade in coaching across the board is underway where it needed to take place.
