I know we all want to beat Oklahoma b/c it would let us thump our chests a bit and would make for great cooler talk today and for years to come but would worth it if not followed up by a stellar season?

Which would you rather have?

A)Win over OU that leaves our team worn out and not having game planned for SMU...resulting in a loss the next week against SMU (ala TCU a few years back) and a few conference losses. Final season record 6-6.

B)Loss to OU, maybe even a big one, followed up by a convincing win over the ponies and losses to Navy and Ark but a run through the belt save a loss to Troy or MUTS. Final season record 9-3 with the trip to N.O.

And just to make this a worthwhile thread the following is not an option,

"I just wanna win 'em all"

Pick either A or B.

B for sure. The best thing that could happen to North Texas is to get back to the top of the Sun Belt and back to the NO Bowl (and win it). These two accomplishments and a win over SMU would help out our recruiting much more than option A, which would lead to a better team in 08 and a better chance to have a major upset in 08. Let's face it, were expected to lose big to Arkansas and OU, so those losses wouldn't hurt us the only bad thing about option B is the loss at home to Navy. B would sling shot us so far in front of SMU that we could then set our sights on TCU. Please God give us B!

Good post, Emmitt. I can't say that I'd be disappointed with either scenario in Coach Dodge's first season. He should get the benefit of the doubt while he installs his game plan and puts his stamp on the program.

GMG!

P.S. - I have to say that I'd always rather beat SMU even though our sights should be set much higher than those snobby SOB's.

B cause maybe at the abnquet we could see a highlight film to the soothing sounds of john mayer.... right emmitt?

Nah. None of his songs have the right "pep" to them.

By the way, how'd the mission go last night? :shifty:

A winning season with a few OOC wins is preferable. I'd hate to beat OU, then flop.

Championships are won with defense. If we get blown out by OU, I'll be dissapointed, but not concerned. Then, if we get blown out by anyone other than Arkansas, I'll be upset. I got a little spoiled 4 or 5 years ago, and I haven't recovered yet.

Personally, I believe you have underestimated Coach Dodge, If you believe that win, lose or draw against Oklahoma will result in not having a game plan and the boys prepared for SMU.

Under scenario B, which we would all love to see, how long do you think TD will stick around with that kind of success? I see him replacing Fran at A&M if we have early, big success and Fran continues to come in 3rd or 4th in the South.

Enjoy this while you can. ;)

I'm with foutsrouts on this one. Ten years from now, far more people would remember our beating OU than winning (another) SBC title. Not that I wouldn't want to, it's just that I don't expect better than a 6-6 record anyway and if that included a win over Oklahoma and still not win the conference, what a statement for the SBC.

Because it's the only win on our schedule (other than Arkansas) that Texans would respect. How many of your B-12/CUSA friends/co-workers actually respect our four trips to the NO bowl....especially since we only won one of the them?

And it's the kind of win that will have the NT alumni/student fence-setters jumping off the fence and laying down some money.

You people that would prefer a win against SMU over OU....are you insane??!!!?!????

OU will be a pre-season Top 10 team and is already being picked to win the Big XII. SMU will be lucky to have a winning record. Beating OU this season could possibly be the biggest victory in the history of UNT football. Beating OU would be HUGE national attention...I'm talking the lead highlight on ESPN.

Although I have little hope that it will happen, I'd take the win over OU without blinking an eye.

Really? A win over OU without a SBC title in the same season only screams one thing...fluke! I don't want that. I want a season where we win the games we are "supposed" to and show consistency. Then, after the bowl win I'd like to see that next step taken. That was kinda the point of my question...do we really want a "signature win" if it's not followed up by season-long success?

Gotchya...I didn't read that part about the final record. I just saw your note about comparing it to what TCU did a few years ago and I'd take that in a heartbeat. TCU may have lost to SMU after upsetting OU but that was their only loss the rest of the season. Likewise, if we were able to pull off the miracle and beat OU, I don't see us going 6-6 for the season. However, even with that stipulation, I think I still take the victory over OU. One question for you...does OU go on to lose 5 or 6 games, or are we their only loss?? As it is today, OU is projected to be a Top 5 team and beating them would be monumental accomplishment. Fluke or not, it would prove that we are capable of upsetting ANYONE at ANYTIME and it would put us "on the map" with the national media and national recruits. I would much rather be trying to disprove a fluke than not have that victory at all. SMU claims that our win last season was a fluke too. Would you trade that win for a loss and an 8-4 record with an SBC title?? Then we'd still have DD running the team.

You don't think Texans would respect a 9-3 season under a new head coach? And seriously, do you think the UT and aTm fans would respect us if we had a win against OU and finished 6-6, hell no! Do you think Texans respect TCU for beating OU, I don't respect them for that game, it's the consistency that I give them credit for. Option A does nothing for us, like FFR said we don't recruit against OU.

Texas and A&M fans are not going to give NT any respect, even if they go 12-0 and play in the National Championship game. They would call it a fluke!

A win over Oklahoma would do more for NT's rep, even if it finished with a 6-6 record than a 9-3 record with a SunBelt conference championship. The W over OU would be be National news for two or three days and would get mentioned every week on the OU TV broadcast. The 9-3 record would give us another berth in the New Orleans Bowl, but how much benifet did that do the last four times it happened?

I agree that that game would give would make national news, but how does that help the football team? You saw what TD can do recruiting wise with just his hs coaching reputation, imagine what he could do with a 9-3 record and a bowl win under his belt. If we beat OU and then lost to SMU the next week all the good publicity would be swept away with everyone thinking that was the fluke of the year and so was NT's win over SMU in 06. Besides, would you rather have someone in Michigan saying did you hear that OU got upset or have the metroplex and the state of Texas saying TD turned NT around from 3-9 to 9-3 with a bowl win?

How does what most would consider a fluke win over OU help us in the long run?

I agree. I lost tremendous respect for TCU in that they lost convincingly to SMU the next week. This was a devasting loss to their BCS hopes.
