UIL hires statewide steroid czar

With a new state law mandating statewide random steroid testing, the UIL named former Plano ISD athletic director Cliff Odenwald as its steroid czar.

Odenwald's primary responsibility will be overseeing random steroid testing that will begin after Sept. 1.

The Plano ISD has been at the forefront of the steroid issue after the 2003 death of Plano West student Taylor West, who committed suicide attributed to the depession caused by illegal steroid use.

Odenwald, 51, has been at Plano four years and previously was an an assistant AD in the Garland ISD to Homer Johnson. Odenwald also had a 16-year coaching career that included Garland Naaman Forest and McMurry University in Abilene
