Troy University running back and former Northview standout Justin Brooks has been suspended from the Trojan football team after an arrest for possession of a controlled substance last Friday in Barbour County.

Barbour County Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw and Chief Deputy Eddie Ingram pulled Brooks over in Barbour County for a routine traffic stop Friday evening, Upshaw said.

“From there, we did a search of the vehicle and found 34 hits of suspected ecstasy,” Upshaw said. “We then arrested him for possession of a controlled substance.”

Brooks was released from the Barbour County jail in Clayton later on a $5,000 bond.

Troy head coach Larry Blakeney found out about Brooks’ arrest Monday and said Brooks was suspended indefinitely.

“I don’t know anything except that he’s got a problem with the law,” Blakeney said. “He’ll be indefinitely suspended until he either is exonerated or pays his debt to society.”

Brooks, a walk-on running back, played in nine of 13 games for Troy last season, rushing 17 times for 72 yards and three touchdowns. As a true freshman, he was used primarily as a short-yardage specialist. Brooks also caught one pass for four yards.

His biggest game came in a 24-19 win over UL-Monroe, when he ran 11 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns.

Brooks played for coach Chip Harris at Northview, graduating in 2006.

Why? It never explains how this sheriff and deputy got from a "routine traffic stop" to "a search of the vehicle."

Is it really that hard to come up with probable cause. And a lot of people are stupid enough to allow the search thinking they won't find there stash.

No, it really isn't that hard to find probable cause...if you know what you're doing. The problem with some of these smaller departments though is that they don't do a very good job of "enunciating and articulating" their reasons for contact/search. Leads to a lot of cases pitched out if the arrestee is smart enough to challenge the search. All I was asking was, if there was a legitimate reason for search, why not state it?

      Should we add Texas State to the AAC?

      Agree on JMU, they have a strong brand, fan base, and admin. that makes the right choices. For those same reasons I'd put App. State at #2.

      Who did better? PAC 12 or Mountain West?

      MWC is a push in overall terms from before the raid to after. Still a solid G6 but lower than the AAC in my mind. PACx has survived, which is all one can really expect for a conference that got shattered in the realignment. But the 2 legacy P4 schools cannot elevate that new version higher than the G6 bunch. Both of the conferences will get low-to-mid TV coverage, and fill the late schedule spots. For the AAC, I'm happy with Army over SMU. I wish we could have pulled Air Force, but so be it. I do expect the PACx to make another run at Memphis, that should be interesting. Fun fact: I've been tracking the realignment via a spreadsheet. As of the NIU change, 46 teams have changed conferences since OUT announced their move to the SEC.

      Because Morris & Cobbs believed they didn't need to. I think McGill, Harris, & Evans are returning, but who knows if Harris or Evans will even be healthy? We added Becks from MOSt, and Hawkins from HS in OK, but who knows what they bring? I don't know that McGill is a starting caliber RB in the AAC. If you think Porter should have been scholarship'd, you're second-guessing Pat. I doubt anyone around here really wants to second-guess Pat's judgement of talent. OR (and this is doubtful), Pat pushed to have Porter 'shiped, but Morris said "no". If that's the case, and Porter goes on to ball-out at UTEP while we struggle in the run game, it's another log on a growing fire under Morris' seat.

      The PAC stands a real chance of becoming the 'Big East of the West', but I think they'll still be fighting to get into the CFP each year with the rest of the G5. MWC obviously is a huge downgrade since they're the conference that got raided. The best thing they have going for them is stability. Outside of AFA and, to a lesser degree, NIU and UNLV, no one has any interest in those schools. AAC did well with the Army pickup. What happens in the next few years under the new commissioner will be important. As a conference, we've scheduled ourselves into a one bid joke like Sun Belt or CUSA. They've gotta figure out some strategy there. For football, it's hard to say we're better or worse off than last year. SMU going to the CFP was a fluke compared with the past 30 years, but I imagine they'll be a stronger program in general than they were in the AAC due to the amount of money and attention the ACC brings. At least while it lasts...
