Endowments are impressive and can be a great academic help to a university. In the vast majority of cases, you can only use the interest from the endowment, not the principal. Public universities, at least in Texas, cannot use endowment interest on athletics.

A lot of the endowment funds are given for a specific purpose, such as endowing a chair in a specific College or School. Those funds are restricted and can be used for no other purpose. North Texas is relatively new to the endowment process and only generates in the neighborhood of one million dollars per year from investments, most of which is nondiscretionary.
