Sun Belt hoops tourney could come to Nashville

Nashville is a candidate to host the 2009 Sun Belt basketball tournament.

Nashville and Hot Springs, Ark. are the only cities identified thus far as possible neutral sites for the tournament, though the search is only in the preliminary stage.

The Sun Belt basketball tournament — which includes 16 men’s and women’s teams under the current tournament format — has traditionally been held at campus sites of member schools. Last season’s tournament was held at Louisiana-Lafayette. The 2006 tournament was at MTSU, 2005 at North Texas, and 2003 and 2004 at Western Kentucky.

The 2008 tournament will be at South Alabama. The 2009 tournament is slated for Feb. 25-March 3.

Where the heck do you play in Hot Springs? I spent a good bit of time there a few years ago, and I don't really recall much of a sports venue besides the racetrack. Maybe they've built something new there in the past decade or so.

How is Nashville a neutral site? MUTS is just 35 minutes down the road. Calling Nashville neutral is like calling Dallas neutral.

The Gaylord Center (Nashville) means dealing with hockey, it also means thousands upon thousands of empty seats even if it is MTSU v. WKU.

The Auditorium has roughly the same number of sideline seats as Summit Arena in Hot Springs and there is more to do than fishing and spas.

As to accessibility, for ASU, UALR, ULM, and UNT, Hot Springs is more accessible. For the Cajuns, probably a wash. For FAU, FIU, and Denver they are either taking a plane to Nashville or one to Little Rock only difference is an hour to the hotel from Little Rock or 30 minutes from the airport in Nashville.

One city would consider it a big deal and one wouldn't. I'll be surprised if Nashville's bid is better financially.

How about Birmingham, although it is a CUSA home. It is centrally located with the hillbillies.

Unless the attendance at the tourney has increased big time since it was held here in Denton, there should be alot of high school gyms that could host the tourney ( except for housing the teams ) . How about Shrevesport with the casinos nearby ?

This is the arena in Hot Springs. It seats 6,200 and looks pretty nice (I would guess it's fairly new...I've never heard of it).

One other thing that there is to do in Hot Springs that time of year: Oaklawn Park is open for horse racing. Not sure if they have casino gambling in their horse track or not.
