Jones deal approved

The North Texas board of regents approved a new contract for men's basketball coach Johnny Jones today.

Jones' base salary will be $170,000 for the duration of the five-year deal, but he will receive additional incentives that will boost his salary significantly over his previous contract. Counting Jones radio stipend, bonus for maintaining membership in the Sun Belt Conference and car allowance, plus a yearly 5 percent raise, he will make $266,811 in guaranteed income beginning Sept 1.

Jones made $205,811 in guaranteed income last season.

Jones will also receive a $100,000 retention bonus if he serves out the entire length of the contract.

For more on Jones' contract, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle or check www.dentonrc.com late tonight.

What would he have to do to actually LOSE membership in the Sun Belt Conference?

I think that to get kicked out the Belt, you'd have to slug the conference commissioner on Canal Street during the NO Bowl warmups and say something bad about his mother while announcing with a bullhorn that each of your players got $10,000 from Mattress Mac without showing up for work even once and then yelling, "Steroids for everyone!"

The conference membership is kind of like a "completion grade" or an attendance extra-credit that a teacher gives, or stock options that a corporate board gives the CEO.

It's a way of boosting the base pay but making part of it look like an incentive.

I'm hoping to get a big bonus at my job for maintaining membership in our coffee club.

Everyone around me in the office is staring at me because I'm giggling like a little girl at this.
