Jones contract to go before board today

The North Texas board of regents is expected to approve a new contract for head men's basketball coach Johnny Jones today at its meeting in Denton.

To review, here is what is known about the deal:

The term of the contract is five years with a base salary of $170,000 and a five percent raise each year. A $6,000 car allowance is included and there are a host of other incentives in the deal.

It's safe to assume that Jones will receive a stipend for appearing on his weekly radio/TV show and another lump sum for maintaining membership in the Sun Belt Conference.

Jones also has incentives in his current deal for season ticket sales, winning the regular season and postseason Sun Belt Conference titles and academic achievement among his players.

The monetary figures attached to those incentives are expected to go up. A few clues to what else could be in the contract can also be taken from the deal head football coach Todd Dodge signed when he arrived at UNT in December.

Dodge has essentially the same benefits written into his contract, but also has a $20,000 season completion payment and incentives for winning 10 or more regular season games.

UNT could take a similar approach with Jones, although his agent likely had a large influence in how the deal was written.

Information on what exactly is in the contract will be available by early this afternoon. Keep an eye on the blog for the news when it breaks.

I know this was discussed in another thread, but I think this sounds like a great deal for both sides. JJ gets a reasonable base salary, that goes up every year. However, he can really make some money if he wins and sells the program (increasing season ticket sales). I think it's great that RV appears to be favoring this type of contract. It's a win-win for everyone involved.

Jones deal approved

The North Texas board of regents approved a new contract for men's basketball coach Johnny Jones today.

Jones' base salary will be $170,000 for the duration of the five-year deal, but he will receive additional incentives that will boost his salary significantly over his previous contract. Counting Jones radio stipend, bonus for maintaining membership in the Sun Belt Conference and car allowance, plus a yearly 5 percent raise, he will make $266,811 in guaranteed income beginning Sept 1.

Jones made $205,811 in guaranteed income last season.

Jones will also receive a $100,000 retention bonus if he serves out the entire length of the contract.

For more on Jones' contract, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle or check www.dentonrc.com late tonight.
