Ortega to UNC-Charlotte

Longtime North Texas women's assistant coach Angela Ortega is leaving the program to become the recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach at UNC-Charlotte under former Mean Green assistant Karen Aston, UNT head coach Tina Slinker confirmed on Thursday.

Ortega has spent the last 15 seasons at UNT under Slinker and spent last year as the Mean Green's associate head coach.

For more on Ortega, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle or check www.dentonrc.com tomorrow morning.

After IMO a very questionable decision to make public that Slinker must get an NCAA appearance to guarantee her job next year, Tina will be lucky to keep any assistants. It is past time to make a coaching change but why hamstring the program and embarrass an 18 year coach for no apparent reason.

I'd wager that the coaching staff would have known of the NCAA appearance expectation even if the public didn't, so what's to say assistant coaches wouldn't be bailing out anyways?
