A school in on Fulce?

The North Texas men's basketball team has been after former Plano standout Joseph Fulce for a while now, but with national signing day just a few hours away there could be a new school making a push for the 6-7 small forward.

New Orleans coach Buzz Williams recruited Fulce when he was an assistant coach at Texas A&M and could be trying to land him a second time, according to an analyst who specializes in recruiting in the state.

Fulce was one of the top players in Texas when he graduated from Plano and signed with Texas A&M before heading to prep school for a year. A&M is out of the picture, but several schools have offered Fulce a scholarship, including UNT, Providence, UNC-Wilmington and Illinois State.

UNT needs has three scholarships left to give after securing Midland College point guard Ryan McCoy and needs a wing player or two after losing three key guards who helped led the Mean Green to the NCAA Tournament last season. Fulce would be a key addition, but the competition for his commitment appears to be tight heading into signing day.

Per Vito - Fulce signed LOI with New Orleans...

I wanted Fulce to help soften the blow of Flemming leaving. However, Fulce is not a franchise player to build a program around. He is a very good complimentary player on a good team. A natural 3, he would have been better than what we had (Edwards, Stewart & Young)

Anyway, the jury is very much still out on this class.

Joseph Fulce made it official Wednesday morning; he is headed to New Orleans, one of North Texas top rivals in the Sun Belt Conference. The 6-7 forward from Plano signed his national letter of intent and will play for Buzz Williams.

Williams recruited Fulce when he was an assistant coach at Texas A&M. Fulce signed with A&M, but ended up spending a year in prep school.

Fulce told Texashoops.com that his relationship with Williams was the key factor in his decision.

Losing Fulce was a tough blow for the Mean Green, which also offered him a scholarship. Fulce was rated among the top 20 players in the state after he graduated from Plano and would have filled an immediate need for the Mean Green, which is looking for wing players in its recruiting class.

While UNT missed out on Fulce, it did land Midland College point guard Ryan McCoy. For more on UNT's recruiting class, see tomorrow's edition of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

I'd rather JJ not sign anyone just to sign someone. His success has been with D1 transfers:

Shawnson Johnson (LSU)

Kendrick Davis (Arkansas)

Roderick Flemings (on paper) (Oklahoma St)

Collin Dennis (South Florida)

Keith Wooden (Arizona State)

3-4 scholarships to offer disgruntled or homesick mid-major prospects wouldn't be too bad. Signing lower level kids to round out the roster would.

He may go out of state as there's not much left in Texas (without grade issues)

Locally, the 2 best players are undersized guards:

Kevin Busby-Hayden, Dallas Spruce 6-1

Will play tonight in an All-Star Game against Ft. Worth. His dad told me during the HS playoffs that UNT was really after him

Rico Wilkins, DeSoto 5-9

Outstanding outside shooter. Best I've seen in awhile

Trumaine Johnson, Humble Kingwood

Transferred from Diboll this past year. Could be a starter in 08-09

Darrick Thomas, Dallas Samuel 6-6

JB Conley, Richardson 6-4

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men’s basketball team has announced the signing of Plano, Texas native Joseph Fulce for the upcoming 2007-08 season.

Fulce (6-7, 190 pounds) was a 5A first-team All-State pick for Plano High School in 2006. Fulce led Plano to the 5A state championship in Texas and averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for head coach Tom Inman.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this team,” Fulce said. “The players seem to have a great chemistry, and I think Coach Williams is a really good coach. I’m looking forward to getting there.”

A 2006 signee at Texas A&M, where UNO head coach Buzz Williams served as an assistant coach, Fulce was ranked as one of the top 150 players nationally according to Hoop Scoop.

This past season, Fulce attended Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., and played for head coach Richard Moore.

Fulce helped Massanutten to a 20-9 record and averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

“Joseph is just a really great kid,” Inman said. “He’s really long, he is a great rebounder on both ends of the floor, and he’s got surprising perimeter skills considering how long he is. The best thing about him is he is used to winning. He is spoiled by it, and he will bring that with him to UNO.”

“I recruited him as a sophomore in high school,” Williams said. “He had a really good year academically and on the court at Massanutten. I have a great relationship with Joseph and his family, and I think he can have a big impact on our program.”

---I am curious... Why is there a final deadline on signing date or at least such an early one for these sports? It seems to me that it should be possible until late summer or until the fall semesters are about to start. After all, there could be students that suddenly become eligible due to summer classes or SAT results being reported... also some students who may decide to do something else and not attend college or at least the college they signed with maybe even their SAT scores when reported might not be up to requirements. . That would leave scholarships open for someone.

--- I thought some scholarships were sometimes offered after some of these summer all-star games.

Second question---- I notice that a basketball thread was locked.. I wonder why? It did not seem to contain any "objectionable" comments..
