Sheryl Crow Anti American Idol Show

Recommended Posts

Just heard on one of the early morning TV shows that Sheryl Crow (one of UNT alum Don Henley's ex backup singers and personal friend) is "anti" the highly rated and successful TV show American Idol because: "It promotes the commercialization of music."

So, uh, Ms. Sheryl, just what kind of music has made you a multi-millionaire?

Sheryl "Ms. Commercial Music" Crow putting down the commercialization of music would be like Abe Lincoln out on the trail campaigning against stove pipe hats. Honest Abe wore the hat and........................ Ms. Crow sings some of the most highly commercialized-sounding and syrppy music on the radio airwaves. Jeez, Sheryl, just keep your celebrity mouth shut and enjoy your huge slice of the American Pie. :(

TRUTH BE KNOWN? I'd bet there are scores and scores (pardon the pun) of Voice Majors over at our internationally famous and most highly respected UNT College of Music who could sing circles around Sheryl Crow.

So I guess it goes back to the old addage: "It's not what you know, but who you know (and whose arse that you know you'll have to kiss in the entertainment world to get your big break)?

What I think she meant is that it promotes the whole "you don't need to work hard on your musicianship and songwriting skills as long as you're attractive" era of popular music we're in. There are so many great musicians out there that can't make a living because radio and video conglomerates like Clear Channel and Viacom force feed the same crap and the average moron eats it up and asks for more...

Music used to have feeling and used to mean something to someone. Now it is all disposable crap. It's sad really.

That said, I dunno if she is the best person to be saying things like this...but at least she's a face people recognize and might follow to better music. I do love the fact that, wherever she tours, she always brings the opening act up for a song or two in her set...a sort encore and endorsement. She did it for Jack Ingram and it got him noticed enough to get a major label deal with real backing this time*.

*(I know, I know...Jack is on the verge of selling his soul, too...but having heard his new album...it came out today...it's a good mix of country crap that he was forced to record and great songs he's been playing live for years that he finally got to record. His song "The Great Divide" should be up for a Grammy this next go 'round.)

If I'm not mistaking when she first started she was mainstream but she was more of a rock chick...its when she started dating Lance Armstrong she kinda mellowed out a little bit. I think what she's trying to say is that American Idol does seem to have a bias towards one type of music in general...I know that old blues guy won it that one year but in general they favor more of the hip/hop, rnb type music. I think I knew what she was trying to say but she didnt say it right.
