Congrats to coach Jankvich.

Jank might be the first ever football or basketball North Texas head coach to be hired as a head coach by another Division I school after being fired by North Texas. Can anyone think of anyone else? Hayden Fry and Jerry Moore left voluntarily.

Jankovich landed his first head-coaching job at North Texas in 1993. He compiled a 53-57 record in four seasons, resigning to take the head-coaching job at Hutchinson CC in 1978.

"When I got there (North Texas), I thought it was a diamond of a job," Jankovich said, "and I think I was right."

The job description changed, however, with a new athletic director forcing Jankovich to schedule nine guarantee games against powerhouse schools in order to raise money. Guarantee games normally mean losses for schools like North Texas.

"After my fourth year I looked at the situation. I had three years left on my contract and he scheduled nine out of 10 guarantee games," Jankovich said. "We changed conferences (from Southland into Sun Belt) and were still a Southland team. That's why I went to Hutch.

"I talked to a lot of people I think highly of, coach (Roy) Williams and coach (Eddie) Sutton and some others. I said, ‘Here's my dilemma. I can stay here, but don't see any chance of success.' People I respect told me I had to leave. Sure enough, they won 20 games the next four years and the coach and athletic director were replaced."

North Texas went 10-16 (5-11 Big West) in his one Big West season. If you take out the OOC wins over Mary Hardin Baylor, Norfolk St, and Phillips and add three Trilli-type road losses to high major programs, Jank's record (7-19) looks like a typical Trilli season.

Figures. Trilli brought in the talent that Jankovich couldn't, but was a craptacular coach. Coach J was probably smart to leave given that situation. Helwig strikes again!

Jank is the only one I can think of. I know the ultimate journeyman Rod Rust was H.C. at New England and in the CFL after leaving North Texas. Not sure if he was forced out or officially fired.

      in the new world of NIL coaches contracts should not be signed for more than three years. There is no longer the luxury of building a team.

      Eric Morris needs to go

      I just hope Jared has been working the phones trying to gather up the money to get rid of this guy. We need to cut our losses before he tanks us like Mac did and we end up getting pummeled by some FCS program again.

      Regarding the guys with no FBS HC experience, I personally have no issue with that. If we pluck a HC from a lower level, it needs to be somebody with extensive HC experience. There's guy who spend almost 10 years as a lower level HC. Examples include Lance Leipold of Kansas who went 109-6 over 8 seasons at D3 Wisconsin-Whitewater before being hired at Buffalo. Bob Chesney of James Madison went 111-46 over the course for 14 seasons at various D2 and FCS schools. There's guys out there to be plucked. My choice is to promote from within with Cobbs. Cobbs may not work at HC and I know it's a huge leap in responsibility but you won't know unless you try and others haven't worked out. He's worked wonders at RB and he's been doing it for a while. I'm sure he's made connections over the course of his playing and coaching career and would surround himself with experienced winners. My biggest thing is he loves this school and would want to succeed for the love of the school and not just for his own career. I looked back at Boise State head coaches since 2001 and found every single BSU HC spent time coaching at BSU prior to becoming HC and a few played at BSU as well. Several were promoted to HC from within, some went and became coordinators elsewhere before returning as their HC, and only 2 had prior HC experience, Bryan Harsin and Dan Hawkins. Harsin actually left to become Texas's co-OC and then Arkansas State's HC for a 1 year before returning to BSU as their HC but he'd been a coordinator there prior and played at BSU. I believe he's currently on the market and only 48 if we wanted somebody with experience though poor recruiting was a complaint at Auburn. Boise State kind of debunks the whole "prior HC experience" requirement, though.
