Spring National Letter of Intent (April 11, 2007)

One of the most under recruited point guards in the country has to be San Jacinto’s 6’0” David Devezin of Houston, TX. The Texas A&M transfer needs to be looked at by any mid major program that needs an experienced point guard to run the show. He can score off the dribble or get others involved. He can penetrate to score or dish off. Flat out runs the show.

Booker Woodfox 6’1” 2G/PG Lewisville, TX - Can play either guard spot. One of the top scorers in juco basketball. Excellent off the dribble or off the catch. High major/upper mid major prospect. Woodfox can put up points in the board in a hurry. Lets the game come to him. Can shoot it from deep or at mid range. Strong body allows him to get into the lane. Signed out of high school with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The native of Lewisville, TX will be a good mid major signee again

Tyrone Scott 5’10 2G Tyler. The native of Waterloo, IA may be the best 3 pt. shooter in the US. He has a “picture perfect” stroke. Much better suited for the off guard spot. Is a definite mid major prospect. Loyola-Chicago, North Texas, and Northwestern State have been after him. (Verballed to Bradley)

Ryan McCoy, 6-0 PG Midland JC (Houston Madison) signed with Tulsa, currently at Fort Smith JC in Arkansas. UNT was in the hunt after his senior year in HS

6’1” PG/BG Kevin Busby-Hayden, Dallas Spruce. UNT has been after him the longest and the hardest. (Donnell Hayden)

Joseph Fulce, 6’7” SF Plano HS. Signed with A&M but went to Prep School in Woodstock (VA) Massanutten Military Academy (Va.) Likes the East Coast. UNT has offered.

Chaps surprise everyone but themselves on the way to NJCAA National Title

Oscar Leroy<br>Sports Writer

Midland Reporter-Telegram

Going against the odds and defying skeptics, the Chaps capped an improbable run through the NJCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Championship Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., with the school's second national championship. The week ended with a resounding 94-75 victory against Chipola (Fla.) Junior College in Saturday's title game.

It was impressive run for an unranked team that had to play four games in four days. MC won its four games by an average of 19 points a game. The 19-point victory margin in the title game was the third highest ever in a title game. The Chaps also set a new title game record with 13 3-pointers, and Tournament MVP Rodrigue Mels' six 3-pointers also set a title game record.

"This is one of the few times I've been a part of a team where the collective will was greater than the other teams," said McCasland, who was named Coach of the Tournament. "We knew it even before we went on the floor. We knew we were going to win. All coaches talk about being a team, playing together, playing hard, but this is the first time I've been a part of a team, as far as playing or coaching, where they truly put the team above themselves."

The Chaps, which ended the season with a 29-8 record, won 12 of their last 13 games, including seven straight in the postseason. The Chaps played their best ball at the right time of year. "I thought we played really hard and for the most part we didn't turn the ball over, we took shots we knew we could make and made people earn baskets on every possession," McCasland.

The way the Chaps finished was a contrast to the way they started the season in November. They were placed with the hard-to-live-up-to expectation of being the preseason No. 1-ranked team. Injuries along with getting the new players acclimated to the system equaled a 1-3 start. The Chaps played well in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference and had a chance to wrap up the league title at home in the regular season finale against Frank Phillips College on March 1. MC had a seven-point lead with 1:06 remaining in the game but blew it and eventually lost 94-91 in overtime, dropping the Chaps to third place in the WJCAC.

"What was crazy was that was one of the lowest points in my coaching career," McCasland said. "Losing at home in the last game that would have given us a conference championship was tough. But I wouldn't have traded it for the national championship." Ironically, it was playing Frank Phillips in the Region V Tournament semifinals that probably brought the Chaps closer together. A tight, back-and-forth contest ended when Mels delivered on a putback dunk at the buzzer to give MC an 86-85 victory. McCasland said his team took on a different attitude to winning as a team after that game.

He said players such as sophomore Kyle Victoria were an example of how the they cared more about winning and the team than they did about themselves. Victoria probably could have shut down his season at the Christmas break after suffering a crack in a bone above his right knee. It is an injury that takes time to heal, but Victoria chose to play instead. "Players like him didn't impact the stat sheet as much but had a great impact on our team because they wanted to win," McCasland said. "He was prepared as anybody to contribute."

Then there is Jordan Brooks and Ryan McCoy. The pair accomplished a rarity in JUCO basketball by winning a national championship last season at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and then winning one at MC. Brooks, an all-tournament selection for the second consecutive year, was the spark plug whose motor continuously ran on and off the court.

"Jordan's got a fire about him that needs to be directed and controlled," McCasland said. "But you can't say enough about his will to win." McCasland said the recruitment of Brooks, Victoria and Mels have all skyrocketed since the tournament, although no visits have been set up until after this weekend's NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.

All-tournament selection Nemanja Calasan has signed a letter of intent with Utah, while McCasland said McCoy visited North Texas in the fall and will likely go there.

Cooley,

Are we shrinking again? In all of your vast list there are about six power forward/centers who stand 6-8 or better. There is one 7-footer. Some years back it seemed that most of the Division 1 teams had a 7-footer. now thay seem to be getting rarer. Are rebounds and blocked shots going out of style?

I don't mean to knock the need for a great point guard nor for a shooting guard that can shoot lights out threes. There are several dandies on your list and I hope that we can get two or three; especially Donnell Hayden's son. But, I don't think that we'll ever see a healthy Jackson, Muse couldn't qualify and Quincy and Wooden will be seniors next year. We also need some big men. Where are they?

Posted (edited)

--McCoy is hard to judge at this point... he was to be the point guard but only played 14-15 games (MC played 37) due to illness and some injury. In fact he missed the on-campus celebration today at the college.... he was at the hospital. I had hoped to meet him. I think he was the point guard at Arkansas-Fort Smith last year when they won the national tournament. His "illness", another's cracked leg bone, and some other ilness/injuries explained why they lost several game early but got their act together once most of them were able to play (February and beyond). It also explained why no-one at the tournament thought they had a chance to win... too many early/mid season losses and the teams they were playing usually had less than 5 losses, some as few as two.. In short the kid has been on two national championship JuCo teams. The MC season was a lot like UNT.... they did very well at the end after a slow start and low expectations of them by most people.... the big difference is they won the National Juco championship after 7 consecutive wins against teams that usually had about 30 wins. .

Does anyone else wonder why UNT did not sign anyone during the early signing period last fall ?

Perhaps its a blessing NT didn't sign someone earlier...we have a chance to pick up a 3* transfer and a 3*freshman that we probably would not have gotten earlier....prior to the NCAA playoffs...which has increased our prestage.

TexasHoops.com Recruiting Staff

TexasHoops.com

For the past six years, Texas hoop fans have been treated to the deep threes of Booker Woodfox - first at Lewisville High School and then the past two seasons at San Jacinto College. But for the next two years, they'll have to watch the high-scoring 6-foot-1 shooting guard from afar. After considering staying in the Lone Star State, Woodfox came back from an official visit up north and instead will be going to the Missouri Valley Conference.

SJCC

"I committed to Creighton yesterday," Woodfox said. "I went on my visit there and I fell in love with the coaching staff really. They were really interested in me and they said that they were looking for a shooter since Nate Funk is leaving. So I think I can come in and play a lot of minutes next year."

Woodfox, who was also getting looks from North Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, really liked the environment he experienced up in Omaha, Nebraska. "I kind of wanted to get out of Texas, and the weather there was nice - and the cold, I kind of like it," Woodfox said. "I like the players there too."

Woodfox felt comfortable making his decision even though there's been speculation that Creighton head coach Dana Altman could be a candidate for the head job at Iowa. "I talked to him about it, and for the most part and I think he wants to stay at Creighton," Woodfox said. "But even if he leaves, if one of the assistants moves up then I'll stay - they were all very nice."

Known best for his parking lot range at Lewisville High School, Woodfox continued to launch daggers at San Jacinto these past two years - but also diversified his game. "I think I've improved a lot," Woodfox said. "I've worked on my defense - in my four years at Lewisville I took maybe one charge, and when I came to San Jac I took 17 charges my freshman year and 15 this past year. I can get to the free throw line a lot more now too."

Texas Hoops Analysis: BOOKER is a pure shooter with deep 3 point range. He can catch and shoot with a quick release, knows how to work without the ball to get open, has a good understanding of the game at the offensive end and uses fakes to create space and get open for mid-range jumpers.

Be very aware of the kids from Beaumont Ozen for the future. SR Kris Richard signed with Tulane and he's got major game. There is a junor at 6-8 named Willie Jefferson (?) that's got major shot blocking abiity, rebounds well, and can score okay Also, they have a PG who was a Freshman this year that was thier sixth man off the bench who's very impressive. His name escapes me. Andre Boutte, the head coach at Ozen, played at UNT.

As for the SOC kids, I like Berry and Gipson, but they are not show stoppers . Now, J'Mison Morgan 6-11 Center and son of Ronnie Morgan, there's a PTP'er.

Finally, keep an eye on 6'2 sophomore guard Caden Dickerson right down the road at Argyle. He's smooth and has major court skills and sense. I'd love to have him in a few years if Texas Tech doesn't take him first.
