C.b.s. Evening News Monday

Katie's EP (Executive Producer) just got fired for low ratings. I think most everybody expected a slight drop in ratings, but not the free fall that has taken place. I follow tv ratings pretty close, and peoples viewing habits are hard to break. Every week I swear I'm not going to watch the local (Austin) NBC affiliate. I work at FOX, the anchors at ABC are friends, CBS has great news personell (Sports and weather suck), and when 6 o'clock rolls around I'm tuned into NBC. The same is true for network news (I do, however, like Brian Williams). I've watched NBC news (local and national) since I was a kid, and I just can't stop. That being said, I'll be watching CBS Evening News tonight.

GO MEAN GREEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More info...

DENTON (3/12/07) – After helping lead the Mean Green to its first ever Sun Belt championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, senior Rich Young will be featured tonight at 5:30 p.m. on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

Young - a former United States Marine who spent time in Kosovo, Iraq, and Africa – is averaging 5.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game this season. He is the first ever Mean Green player and the only player in the Sun Belt this season to record 50 assists, 30 blocks, and 30 steals in a single season.

It was in the SBC championship game that Young notched one of the best performances of the year with 15 points, five assists, four blocks and two steals. He also threw in a pair of dunks that made their way onto numerous highlight reels.

Channel 11 in Dallas is the local CBS affiliate and will carry the broadcast. CBS is also the title network of the NCAA Tournament that begins on Tuesday. The Mean Green will open up with its first-round opponent Memphis in New Orleans on Friday.

----They need to get a Texan in as anchor... Cronkite wasn't exactly a Texan but he graduated from UT, Dan Rather was from Sam Houston and Bob Shiefer (my favorite) was from TCU. I too started watching NBC after Katie took over.

---Rather harmed his credibility over the Bush military report... The document was fake (pretty obvious from appearance) although having lived through the Nam era as draft bait I know that getting into the National Guard at that time was next to impossible unless you knew someone. No one I knew was able to get in which basicly meant you would avoid Nam... No National Guard units were ever sent.... unlike Iraq which has lots of them (no draft now, there was then). You can sort of understand the Rather's situation since he had been shot at regularly in Nam as a reporter, and the other guy found a safe place to stay but later had no problem sending others to Iraq for "questionable" reasons.

---Go Mean Green... I may be able to make NO... depends on son's situation. I am on Sping Break...I am the only family member to have never been there.

---Thanks to CBS for covering the NT player's story.

I'm not sure if you were actually intending to give a defense of Rather's actions, or just trying to figure out what motivated him to do what he did. I doubt it is only the fact that he viewed combat as a journalist that made him seek anything he could to discredit Bush. Clinton was a draft-dodger, but do you think Rather would have gone to such lengths to discredit him? There is nothing more there than the fact that Rather is a looney liberal (Link), and looney liberals hate George W. Bush.

Regarding the Vietnam era, my father was in the National Guard and he didn't know anybody.

The Lt Gov. of Texas admitted to giving 'w' special treatment to get into the air nat'l. guard. He did this as a special favor to some influential friends of w's. It is a FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clinton was a draft dodger? Really?!!!!!! Would you care to back that up with some facts?

It's not just looney liberals that hate Bush. A vast majority of America disaproves of him.

And I've done so good lately not getting baited into political arguments on this board.

So the real story is a politician pulled strings for a kid. I don't see why this should be held against him... at least he wanted to serve in some way unlike lots of other kids in the 1960s.

I think you responded to my post without considering the context in which it was written. I never denied that W received special treatment. My statement about my father was in response to SE's quote, "getting into the National Guard at that time was next to impossible unless you knew someone."

Was Clinton a draft dodger? Link

Your closing statement is misleading: "It's not just looney liberals that hate Bush. A vast majority of America disaproves of him." There is a vast difference between disapproving of the job a President is doing and hating him. Good conservative Americans stand by their President in time of war, while looney liberals (I don't necessarily include all liberals in this category) loathe him to the degree that they actually want the United States to face defeat at the hands of terrorists.

Cronkite isn't a native born Texan, but he did attend Lanier Junior High (as I did) and graduated from San Jacinto High in Houston. A whole lot more Texan than W. Bush. Great to see Mr. Young and our school get some well deserved prime time national pub.

What... Bush not really a Texan???... He was born in Connecticut, graduated from a New England preppie school, and has degrees from Yale and Harvard. Oh yeah... I live 1/2 mile from where he lived in Midland after he was married and he once jogged by my house at times. He went to school in Midland until the 8th grade then left and went to prep school but lived here a while during the 70's during the oil boom... his oil business was not that successful.. he made more money by buying the Rangers from bankrupted Eddie Chiles and then selling it, he or the Bush family owned 10% I think.

----Clinton did nothing different that 90% of college kids were doing during the 60's. We all had student deferments and a lot of us tried to join the National Guard which likely meant no service in Nam (I didn't but friends did, none succeeded). My deferment was revoked just as the Tet offensive was being fought and I had to take a physical....oddly I failed (age 23)... but so did ALL of us over 23 that day... however every 19 old passed. Do not compare Nam to WWII..completely different when Americans absolutely supported the effort and answered the call. WWII was a war to survive, Nam and Iraq isn't. The average PFC in Nam was 19.6, in WWII he was 27. Who knows now, no draft anymore. As for Lt. Gov. Barnes (the Lt.-Gov. mentioned) -- I have met him... he was even in my home when I was in HS.
