I dono if anyone else caught it but RV did hint at an extension at the welcoming party he said something like so does everyone think we should keep this guy around a while

I was there and I didn't hear anyone say no.

To me JJ has finally lived up to his potential and promises this year. I was skeptical of his teams because they had underachieved so much in his previous seasons. They would hang tough with top teams out of conference then get beat by bad teams in conference and finish .500 with a loss in the first round of the tourney. JJ proved he can coach a team to a championship and has made a believer out of me. Regardless of what happens in the dance JJ deserves atleast a 2 year extension.

I would hope that RV learned his lesson by extending Slinker last season. Why not make sure this season isn't a fluke before giving him a long term contract? If he comes through again next year, then go all out.

I agree with what you are saying. If you want to give an extension then I would look into 1-3 years MAXIMUM just to give JJ satisficaction and let him know that we are committed to him and are thankful for the job he's done. I just hope RV doesnt give a long long term extension. For the records I have always supported JJ and never thought he should be in the hot seat this year...despite some tough losses.

Not a smart move....by taking a very bad program and turning it around and going to the national tournament JJ can get a job at a bigger name school for much more money.

If we want to fire JJ that would be the best way to do it....he would be gone ....I don't want to roll the dice that we can find anyone better....................JJ started so far down in the depths and now has us in the national tourney....he has earned an extension and raise. Folks we beat Tulsa, Rice from CUSA despite losing several games by less than 2 points. We haven't been so good since Blakely was at NT.

I'm hesitant to give a long term contract extension because this might be a 1 year blip. But he definitely deserves some kind of compensation. Remember where we were she he took over from Trilli. What were we....20-87 while Vic was here?

Maybe a new 3 year deal with a nice bump in salary.

I read somewhere he got a 10K bonus for winning the tourney.

I so wanted to see JJ succeed but also felt there were major problems during games. And that has all been covered so I won't go into it. But he's alway's been a fantastic represenative of our university, alway's speaking upbeat and positive and greets everyone with a smile. You can't help but love him when you meet him. In '05 when we played LSU guess who was one of our biggest fans on the sideline that night in Baton Rouge? JJ. I remember all the great things the Memphis people had to say about him here on our board when he came here.

The new success is just perfect for a wonderful guy. I hope he stay's as long as he wants and continues to raise the bar even higher with each year.

ya but if he goes on to win it all again next year, there might be bigger schools just waiting with more $$ then we would want to spend, and we would end up back at square one

That's a good problem to have. If we're replacing coaches because they won too much and others want them, it's better than replacning coaches because they won too little and were fired.

Or better yet, they won some on small time level, and no one wants to take them from us. But, we keep giving them contract extensions to fight off the potential "courters" (who knew more than us to begin with) and never came knocking then we fire them and still have to pay them :D .

If a "big time" school wants JJ, there is nothing we can do to stop it. Buying out a contract is no big deal to those type of schools when they want a coach, but buying out a contract when we want to be rid of a coach is a big deal at North Texas. If RV wants to throw in a $25k bonus for making the tournament in '08, and another $25k for winning a game in the tournament, then some kind of performance bonus like that is absolutely fine with me. I just don't want this to be a fluke and we revert back to .500 ball like we have been under JJ since until this season. If JJ proves he can build off this and build the program and grow as a game coach, then hell yeah, extend him out.

To let a coach stay "as long as they want" because of ONE season is absolutely ridiculous. Who all here is happy that Slinker is seemingly "staying as long as she wants"?

Vito actually had quotes from RV in this article. I am now duly impressed, I knew you could do it. Good job, keep it up! :)

Looks like Rick talked about Johnny's contract on Wednesday in the Star-Telegram's blog. Apparently UNT's been getting a ton of media requests. Found a lot of UNT stuff in this thing.

That media request article is interesting; a lot of NT media exposure since Dodge signed to now.
