The impact of UNT's NCAA bid

North Texas welcomed home its men's basketball team at a pep rally on Wednesday, just one day after the Mean Green won the Sun Belt Conference basketball tournament to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

So just what will the bid mean for the Mean Green?

A whole lot, if you ask people both inside the program and in the world of college basketball recruiting.

UNT's players, not to mention head coach Johnny Jones and university president Gretchen Bataille, said the program will be viewed differently after the Mean Green received an unprecedented wave of publicity after its win over Arkansas State in the Sun Belt tournament final.

UNT officials and players aren't the only ones who think the Mean Green could be in for some good times in the coming weeks and beyond. Mike Kunstadt of Texashoops.com, the expert when it comes to basketball recruiting in the state, said the Mean Green should have a great year in recruiting because of its tournament win.

Jordan Smith, a shooting guard from Irving God's Academy and the 25th ranked player in Texas in the Class of 2007, is among the players considering committing to UNT. Former Plano standout forward Joseph Fulce is also considering UNT.

Fulce spent last season at Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia. He was the 28th-ranked player in the state in 2006.

"North Texas is going after some guys who will make them better," Kunstadt said.

It's all a reward for what UNT accomplished in the Sun Belt tournament.

Isn't Irving's God's Academy one of the schools the NCAA is looking at as to whether or not their grades will count towards college certification. It was in an article I saw this week where 4 schools were turned down and I believe God's Academy was specifically mentioned as undecided at this point.

      Moore Leads UNT to New Year’s Day Victory Over Tulsa

      DENTON, Texas – A season-high 24 points from Jaaucklyn Moore led the UNT women’s basketball team to an 84-78 victory over Tulsa inside The Super Pit on Wednesday. With Kyla Deck unavailable for the game, Moore made her first start since UNT’s win over Northwestern State on Nov. 20. The senior guard delivered by tying her career high at North Texas, matching her 24-point performance against Grambling State last season when she surpassed 1,000 career points. “Jaaucklyn Moore came in and started the game and was huge today,” head coach Jason Burton said. “It starts with what she did offensively, but she had to guard Delanie Crawford in the second half with Desiree Wooten in foul trouble. It was a tremendous game from her with how she played on both sides of the ball.” Moore was an integral part of the Mean Green taking an early lead in the first quarter and never giving it up. North Texas scored the first 12 points of the game, holding Tulsa scoreless for the first 6:04 of the game. However, the Golden Hurricane offense came to life in the second quarter, putting together a 13-2 run behind a pair of 3-pointers from Elise Hill and another one from Crawford. After UNT took a 38-32 lead into halftime, the Mean Green outscored Tulsa 26-16 in the third quarter sparked by a pair of big runs in the period. As the teams traded buckets in a fast-paced game, UNT was able to extend its lead to 16 points early in the fourth quarter and hold on late to improve to 10-4 this season and 2-0 in conference play. North Texas received valuable minutes and performances from several pieces Wednesday, including 18 points from Tommisha Lampkin. Ereauna Hardaway added 13 points and six rebounds, while Aniyah Johnson neared a double double with nine points and seven boards. Despite Crawford leading Tulsa with 22 points, the Mean Green made it tough on the Preseason All-AAC First Team selection, holding her to 9-of-20 overall 2-of-8 from 3-point range. Hill also scored 22 points for the Golden Hurricane with six 3-pointers on the day. North Texas will look to remain unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference when it travels to Memphis on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip off.

      If I’m one of the seniors (Rod Brown, Texada, Duncan, etc) I wouldn’t want him on our sideline.
