This was my very 1st UNT BB game. Great game!!! Now A & M has become a basketball power. Currently ranked 6th in the Nation and with the way things are going they could be looking a possible 1 or 2 seed come March Madness time. I hope in the near future , it will UNT that is ranked in the top #25. It's possible , very possible.

North Texas 91, Texas A&M 88

RECAP | BOX SCORE

DENTON, Texas (AP) _ Kyle Crawford scored 20 points, leading the University of North Texas to a 91-88 victory over Texas A&M Monday night.

The victory was sealed when Aggie guard Andy Leatherman missed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining. The Eagles' Brandon Gilbert grabbed the rebound to end the game.

Chris Davis added 19 points for North Texas (1-2). Deginald Erskin had 13, while Dexter Tennell and Gilbert each had 10.

Carlton Brown led Texas A&M (0-2) with 24 points. Bernard King had 23.

North Texas led the game by 18 points with just over 12 minutes left, but the Aggies began chipping away. They were aided by deadly free-throw shooting, and they cut the margin to 84-81 with 1:21 remaining.

But Crawford came through with some clutch shooting for North Texas, including a 15-foot shot from the wing as the shot clock expired to give the Eagles an 86-81 advantage with 50 seconds left.

The Aggies weren't done, though. Brown's layup at the 14-second mark cut North Texas' lead to 90-88.

Crawford was fouled and hit one of two free throws, then Leatherman missed the 3-pointer.

Chris Davis was one of the most fluid players I've ever seen. There's a guy named Beasly @ USM that reminds me of him.

Hard to believe they're having record crowds over in College Station...for BBall games. Congrats to Gillespie and those Ags for turning it around so quickly.

Remember when Johnny Jones was hired over Billy Gillespie?

If I was to try out for American Idol my song would be .... " If I could turn backtime.... If I could find a way..... "

i remember watching NTSU, the step-child of the MVC, in 1967 - at the OLD PIT - defeating Texas A&M, the defending SWC BB champions. Amazingly, NTSU got beat by the U of H, with Elvin Hayes, by 2 in the Hawaii Classic. If ya'll dont remember U of H defeated a favored Lew Alcinder UCLA team that same season. Lew became Karrim Abdul Jabar or Abdul Karrim Jabar.

After the U of H loss by 2 we all knew that NTSU would win the MVC. I think we came in the middle of the pack. However the next two years NTSU only lost one home game, to Louisville. That is when you had to get to the PIT early to get a seat and the place would absolutely "rock" with noise. People would scream, throw rubber snakes on the floor and stomp on the bleachers.

Wouldn't have mattered if we hired Gillispie. If he left UTEP for A&M, he sure as hell would've left NT for A&M. Now UTEP is back in the same gutter they were before he was hired.

You're right about Gillespie leaving for A&M from UTEP or UNT. I could have done without the gutter comment.

FWIW, we're hardly in a gutter. And certainly not the disaster that Rab left us in before BG came.

I would LOVE to see this "guttered" UTEP team take on UNT.

Well, UTEP's lost to both Tulsa and Rice, teams NT has beaten. Beyond that, losses to New Mexico State (2x), Jackson State, and Chicago State (lol?). Just saying UTEP didn't sustain the momentum from Gillispie's season before leaving for A&M, and doesn't look to be getting to the tourney this year.

Yeah, down year makes us a gutter program since BG left? Probably no tourney this year. I don't see UNT making it without much luck either. Never mind the two 20 win seasons UTEP had under Sadler and their NCAA/NIT appearance. Speaking of gutters, how long has it been since our (UNT) last tourney visit?

A down year by UTEP standards, for sure. Never mind we'll be closing in on 20 wins in Barbee's first season. BG had 6 wins his first season. Last time I checked, people weren't really hopping around the room, rejoicing about JJ's successes.

We're (UTEP) a Jekkle & Hyde team, for sure. But there's no question about our improvement since the beginning of the season. More than enough to win a rematch with some of the Jackson and Chicago States of the world.

Last I checked, NMSU wasn't doing too bad. Can UNT beat Nevada? I think we better worry about the Arkies first (ouch). At least when UTEP lost to those aforementioned States, they were at the beginning of the season.

Gawd that last statement make me cringe :P

I think we both are of the same opinion of UNT, I just don't agree with your assessment of UTEP as in a gutter since BG left, especially considering our (UNT) history.

Way to overreact.

I wasn't comparing them against NT at all other than you questioning what would happen if the two teams play. NT is a non-factor in post-season college basketball, and it's been that way for a long time. I still listen to the games and follow the team, because they're my school. You're trying to play both ends against the middle on me.

As a college basketball fan, UTEP isn't even on the radar and won't come anywhere near the tournament, let alone the sweet 16. I honestly don't give a crap about UTEP. I only mentioned the school because of Gillispie and the link between the two schools. Take your inferiority complex to an ACC, PAC10, or Big Ten board. Argue your case there.

How did the Sweet 16 comment come into play?

I apologize if I seemed to overreact to the "gutter" label. It just seems to have negative connotations, and seemed a little bit blind to what's been accomplished the last two years. I wasn't taking anything you said personally. Certainly, it gave me your own perception of UTEP athletics. So thank you...I think

I guess some people think 62-29 since BG left qualifies as gutter.

The BG link seemed like good justification to expound a little. Please don't over-generalize and assume any more "inferiority complexes". We're both on the same side here. You just choose to not know anything about UTEP.

Yes, Gillespie would have probably have left us after a few years. But, he wouldn't have left us that quickly....without taking us to the NCAA tournament. We've only been once, as you know.

So yeah, count me in. If I can have a great coach, and only have him for a few years....I'll take that, because they take you to the Promised Land. (I think Boise State has had about 4 football coaches in the last 10 years.....they "reload" at the coaching position).

Back to the 1967 game vs. A&M in the old pit, we ran the aggies out of the place. The late Shelby Metcalf was the coach of the aggies and spent most of the evening with his head in his lap, looking down at the floor. I did a sign for that game that proved profetic....Have You Ever WATCHED An Aggie Joke?

---During the 60's at the old Pit the concession stand did not sell any ice in cokes either...... The reason... a very large per cent of them would up being thrown on the court at sometime during the game after a perceived bad call..... Today's fans have no idea what it was like to play in the best conference in America and how crazy those MVC games were. My senior year 65-66, five of the top ten was MVC members and only two teams has lost at the Christmas break.... NTSU and Tulsa, who had lost one... to Texas Western which eventually would become the National Champion that year.

In the above post, UCLA won the National Championship with one loss which was Houston...... and Houston had one loss... UCLA at the Final four.
