UNT lands Waco area WR/DB

One of the top players from the Waco area became the latest addition to Todd Dodge's first recruiting class at North Texas on Saturday.

B.J. Lewis, a defensive back/wide receiver from Waco Robinson, received a scholarship offer from UNT on Thursday and accepted the offer on Saturday.

Lewis, 6-1, 185, was a first-team All-District 17-3A selection as a wide receiver, defensive back and return specialist last season.

Lewis said he was recruited as a wide receiver but would be willing to play defensive back. UNT was the only school to offer Lewis a scholarship, but he received interest from Rice, West Texas A&M and Tarleton State.

The Waco Tribune-Herald rates Lewis No. 21 on its list of the top 25 recruits in the Central Texas area.

CLASS 3A DIVISION I TITLE GAME

LIBERTY-EYLAU WINS THRILLER: Thanks to a huge tackle by Emmanual Fagan,

Libery-Eylau pulled out a 35-34 victory over Waco Robinson in the

Class 3A Division I title game. The Leopards finished the season with

a 12-3 record while Robinson ends the season 12-3 as well.

Robinson scored on a 6-yard touchdown run by quarterback Randy Kitchens

with 18 seconds remaining to pull within one, 35-34. Rockets coach

Brian Lewis then decided to go for the win instead of sending the game

to overtime with a PAT.

The Rockets lined in like they were going to kick the ball. But after

the snap, the ball was pitched to Seth Mogavero on an end-around.

However, Fagan read the play perfectly and darted into the backfield

and tackled Mogavero at the 8-yard line to seal the state title for the

Leopards, its first since 1999.

"The guys played their hearts out," Lewis said. "We made the decision

to go for it, and it was one of those cases where if you make it, you're

a hero and if you miss it, you're a goat. But I give all the credit in

the world to the kids, because they did everything we asked and played

their guts out."

Liberty-Eylau was dominated statistically, gaining only 282 yards while

Robinson racked up 561 total yards. But the Leopards forced four turnovers,

three of which led to touchdowns in the first half. Liberty-Eylau running

back accounted for most of the Leopards' yardage with 115 yards rushing

on 14 carries while James Batts added 65 yards on 12 carries. Will Middlebrooks

threw for 93 yards on 3-of-11 passing while suffering three interceptions.

Kitchens had a big game for Robinson, rushing for 121 yards and three

touchdowns on 20 carries while throwing for 153 yards on 12-of-28

passing with one interception. B.J. Lewis had five receptions for 98 yards.

Liberty-Eylau led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a Stedmon

Dewberry fumble recovery in the end zone and a Middlebrooks 4-yard run.

Kitchens scored the Robinson touchdown on a 2-yard run.

Both teams scored twice in the second quarter to give the Leopards a

27-21 lead at the half. Robinson then claimed a 28-27 lead in the fourth

quarter when Mogavero scored on a 2-yard run. But Liberty-Eylau claimed

a 35-28 lead with 7:54 remaining when Blair Taylor recovered a blocked

punt in the end zone and James converted the two-point conversion.
