The girl is smoking hot! Incredible voice as well. What a great addition to the NT Jazz department.

Click here and then on Miss Texas

She was also voted fan favorite and won a preliminary award for her vocal talent.

She should have won as I thought she presented herself with the most poise and answered the final question very well too. Congrats to her and her family.

from this past summer after she was crowned Miss Texas:

Shilah Phillips is the 2006 winner of the Miss Texas title.

Notable achievements

Phillips won the 2006 Miss Frisco title on 30 October 2005.[1]

Phillips was the first African-American to hold the Miss Texas title when on 8 July 2006, at 24, she won the pageant on her first attempt. She is only the second woman in the history of the program to win the title on her first try. She competed as Miss Frisco.

Phillips began studying jazz music at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and, while there, received the Most Outstanding Vocalist award. She was recently accepted into the renowned jazz studies program at the University of North Texas.

Shilah attended the prestigious Denver School of the Arts from seventh grade until graduating from high school. She graduated tenth in her class, and was voted most likely to succeed by her senior class.

Oh, she not only won the talent portion, she also scored highest in the Miss Texas swimsuit competition.

I've got to share some of this e-mail I received this morning. This guy lives in Atlanta ...................

Anyway, so Miss Texas makes it to the top ten and she's this really

beautiful African American from Plano. So they do the interview ... And this

year Chris Matthews was one of the judges, so it was like a press conference

grilling. But they asked her what her favorite nursery rhyme was and she

said Cinderella. And Matthews says, "Ten girls have already said that." But

she said, "When I entered this competition, I had $200 to my name. Through

this experience winning Miss Texas, I have a $13,000 scholarship which will

allow me to graduate from North Texas ..."

Then she said she was dressed in all black as a show of support for former

football coach Dickey ...

I take it that the young lady takes her education seriously. I liked her FINAL answer to the question asked at the end of the show that supposedly could tip the balance between the final three. She was asked, "and I'm paraphrasing here", but she was asked somethin about what she was most proud of about this country(like I said, I'm paraphrasing here and it was probably a little more than just that), but as cool as Johnny Quinn running a quick out for a 1st down, she quickly states how in this country, no matter how rich or poor you are, that in america you have the opportunity to get an education because it's free. How true. If only more folks taught and instilled that concept into their kids to take advantage of it.............
