UNT FOOTBALL NOTES

UNT's spring dates set

North Texas coach Todd Dodge said Thursday that dates for his program's first spring football workouts are nearly set.

UNT's spring practice will open March 13 and end with the spring game at 3 p.m. April 22. UNT is on spring break March 19-23, and practice likely will resume the following week.

In the past few days, Dodge said he had seen his players in off-season conditioning for the first time. His first team meeting was last week, and he'll sign his first recruiting class Feb. 7.

Tight end decisions

Entering the spring, UNT has more tight ends (at least five) than wide receivers on scholarship. With the spread offense Todd Dodge is installing, it's no surprise that six high school wideouts have committed to the Mean Green. Another, Evan Fentriss, has already transferred from Rice.

"We have to evaluate our flexibility on offense," Dodge said. "It might be to our advantage to use tight end sets."

Dodge won't rule out moving some tight ends to other positions.

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that we can use more receivers," he said.

Muzzy on hold

Todd Dodge said receiver Zach Muzzy is pursuing a fifth year of eligibility.

Muzzy, who graduates in May, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the fourth game of the 2003 season on UNT's first kickoff return.

UNT is asking the NCAA to waive its 20-percent rule that denies medical hardships to injured players who appeared in more than 20 percent of a team's games in a season. Technically, Muzzy played in 30 percent of UNT's 13 games in 2003.

Muzzy's scheduled degree, good grades and his lack of a redshirt year could factor into the decision.

Lewis leaves

After less than a month on the job, UNT defensive ends coach Derek Lewis resigned this week to become tight ends coach at Minnesota.

Lewis, a former tight end at Texas, was coached there in 1998 by Tim Brewster, Minnesota's new head coach and a former tight ends coach with the Longhorns.

Spring game on a Sunday afternoon? Not a bad idea.

would have liked to see the spring game on a Saturday, as it makes it tough for the out of towners to make a Sunday game and return home the same night, but I will take what I can get! plus, it works out really well for people who live in the metroplex to attend a Sunday afternoon game (as people usually reserve saturday for getting everything done- home depot, bed bath and beyond... if they have enough time), and the majority of fans will most certainly be from the area.

Cant wait!

A novel idea, conducting Spring drills in the Spring ! What will people think of next ! :unsure:

Oh, I dunno...maybe puttting a team on the field that actually tries to win EVERY GAME!

Here's another crazy thought. How about having a coaching staff that is actually glad to be at North Texas and looks forward to connecting with the fans/alumni... :thumbsup:

      The Answer is Marketing....

      We all love Grant. Think it was a typo. Tough name for GM and auto correct. I don’t know about the dormant alumni. They seem like lost causes to me. A buddy last weekend who never goes to a UNT game though a grad, was happy to send me pics from smu where he went to see his beloved Noles. No connection to FSU but he was there. He doesn’t disparage UNT but doesn’t care either. And the silly alums on sports radio apologize for speaking about UNT or giving an update about a G5 team. Spineless. Go after the young families moving into Denton. Make it the Mean Green Village Fairgrounds for 7 Saturdays a year with different themes. October fest, funnel cake fan fest, food drive game in November, summer sizzling barbecue bonanza for a September game. Have a Mariachi Mean Green crew like they do at Texas Rangers. The mariachis on mariachi Monday walk around the concourse in their Ranger red outfits smiling taking pictures with fans. Then they play a few sets on the big screen and boom you get a unique group of peeps you look forward to seeing. The coolest thing this season was all their close ups of their championship rings as they strung their instruments. Could be a nice link to our Denton Hispanic community. Do some fun things the community would come out to and get them into the stadium. Jared is doing some creative things this season. Like Oktoberfest and tickets and tee promotion. Sellout game push and more to come for November. Keep creating interesting unique and different because UNT definitely is creative unique and interesting. GMG

      Portland Watching Party?

      I don’t think you’re going to feel in danger or anything. I go out most evenings when I’m there. It just isn’t that lively since so much has been shuttered. If the weather is nice, though, it might be livelier than I’m thinking and I’m told the city has been taking an effort the last few months to clean up the sidewalks. The area around Powell’s books (which you definitely should go to) is usually pretty busy and touristy. There are several really good brewpubs nearby and a dive bar or two. Feel free to DM me if you want any recommendations.

      I agree with this a lot. Winning those big games we seem to always sh*t the bed will do wonders. Its like has always been said. "Build it and they will come". Btw, I hope this was just a typo and you were not trying to take a swipe at Grant.
