Howard Johnson leaving UNT post

10:15 AM CST on Wednesday, January 24, 2007

By Matthew Zabel / Staff Writer

Howard Johnson, the University of North Texas provost who stirred a campuswide controversy over tenure in 2004, will leave his post to serve as a special assistant to Chancellor Lee Jackson.

In a memo to his colleagues today, Johnson said he continues to look for a job as a university president elsewhere.

He is currently one of three finalists for president of Florida A&M University.

News reports in Florida suggest that university could name its new president as early as Feb. 1.

“UNT now stands at a critical point in its development - one that will demand a long-term commitment from its academic leadership to achieve its strategic goals,” Johnson wrote in a memo. “At the same time, I stand at a threshold in my own career, where it is important to seek new experiences and perspectives that I can bring to a future presidency.”

Jackson, UNT’s chancellor since 2002, said in a prepared statement that Johnson would work in the coming months to help the university improve how it addresses student access and its graduation rate.

UNT President Gretchen Bataille has appointed Gary S. Krahenbuhl, formerly senior vice president at Arizona State University, to serve as UNT's interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, while the University conducts a national search to fill the position. Krahenbuhl will begin work at UNT on Feb. 1.

Not very hard to read between the lines. Looks like Dr. B has arranged for Johnson to be Jackson's special assistant in charge of pencils until he gets his exit visa.

Utah State got any admin openings?

But he was so successful with the hotels....

Campus Wide? That little embarrassment went nation wide. And what does it say for the quality of educaiton at Florida A&M to have him as a finalist? Geez!

The tenure issue may have been mainly campus wide, but his plagiarism issue was national, and a very bad reflection upon UNT.

So Dr B. is cleaning house, and takes the time out of her day to meet potential recruits (after she hires TD).

Is there anyone still questioning that hire?

Nope...

In fact, my serving of Texas-style chicken fried crow concerning my initial thoughts of her hiring has been a pleasure to eat. FWIW, I don't mind eating some crow when I'm wrong and what I'm wrong about means good things for UNT. I hope I'm wrong about a few other things and toward the top of that list would be a UNT athletic dept. ancillery staff that helps (with consistent "large crowd" producing promotions and no, I won't mention a Band Day); anyway, that that ancillery staff helps our school with the kind of creative promotions as to get the casual/borderline fans out in record-numbers as to help us move up to the 25-30,000 plus per home game level.

Speaking of crow: Has anyone really ever eaten some real crow? Well................I heard it tastes a bit like, uh, chicken-snake?!?!? :(

Dr. "B" has exceeded many others expectations, too, from what I hear.

Re Crow: Probably pretty bad... My cat will eat almost any bird in sight (loves doves, which he catches regularly) except those noisy black grackles. I have shot some with a pellet gun and the cat will not touch the things. [ they sort of look like crows ] They must be bad if a cat won't even try to eat it.

The cat won't touch them because cats never, ever admit they were wrong.

Stebo can tell you all about "Crow", how it smells and taste.

Anytime anyone else would like for me to prepare some for you just let me know. We have an abundance of them in western Parker County.

I bet you're still steaming over Captain knocking over that vase.

LOL! I got a new vase. :) Actually, Sox was the one who informed me of that one.
