AP-TX--Parcells Retires (Tops),0168

Parcells retires from coaching, leaving Cowboys after 4 seasons

IRVING, Texas (AP) _ Bill Parcells resigned as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys today -- and says he's retiring from coaching.

He leaves the Cowboys after four seasons and ends a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

In a statement issued through the Cowboys, Parcells says he's in good health. He also says he feels ``lucky to have been able to coach in the N-F-L for an extended period of time.

He expressed ``nothing but good feelings and gratitude to all the players, coaches and other people that have assisted me in that regard. ``

The announcement comes 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss in Seattle -- and it comes as something of a surprise.

Parcells had been at his office nearly every day since the playoff loss. There also were other indications that the

65-year-old coach was returning for a fifth year in Dallas and 20th as an N-F-L head coach.
