If he competes for, and wins his job as a starter there is no one on the team more deserving. Think of the great cowboy, Bill Bates, he was no giant but when he suited up, no one played harder.

P.S. -- if you morally disagree with someone playing devil's advocate, why are you posting on a "discussion" board?

I also morally disagree with missing sarcasm

Yeah I think he's too short also. His center of gravity is way too low to be able to handle all of the 5' 9"- 6' RB's whom he'll be asked to tackle. I also think that Coach Dodge is way to short to be a D1 head coach. How the hell is he supposed to see over all of those towering 6' line judges? Just a hopeless situation. :(

You might be on to something there, Dodge may need to visit PANCHO's a few times a week and put on some lbs.

Only Babino and Cobb are undersized. Babino runs a 4.5 so he can get away with being small. Padron is no where near that fast. Never heard of Cobb, but I guarantee he is fast if he is on scholarship at UT.

Well, I think we've hit on the crux of the argument here now haven't we. UNT recruited him so he must be slow and short. If, on the other hand, UT had signed him we'd to "guarantee he is fast if he is on scholarship at UT." <_<

Didn't a short and slow guy with big high school numbers sign there a few years back? I think his initials were TD.

I never bashed Padron, I welcome him to my alma mater. I stated only facts. He has below average size and speed for a Division 1A linebacker. Dickey could have signed this guy if we are the only D1 school offering him. As far as his ceiling... He is probably as tall as he is going to get. He can't put on much more weight and maintain the speed he has and most kids are already as fast as they are going to be at 18 years old (of course, he may get slightly faster). He's been in the Southlake program for the last 6 years so his strength has been developed well already.

He was an AWESOME high school player, but the reason no other D1A schools offered him is because he is probably already close to reaching his potential physically.

That said, I hope he goes on to become the greatest player in UNT history. I'm fine with Dodge signing a guy he has gone to battle with already and trusts. I just hope he signs some other guys with higher upside.

To try to respond to this constructively:

I remember in '97 and '98, before I transferred to UNT, I was watching a DE at UT-El Paso by the name of Brian Young absolutely terrorize college quarterbacks during his career. Not just WAC players: I witnessed - in person - him single handedly sack the Oregon QB (Akili Smith, I think?) on two consecutive plays for safeties...no kidding. He put a swim move on the left guard and ran in almost untouched to take Smith down on their first offensive play of the game. The stadium went nuts...then booed, as the play was called back due to holding on the other side of the line. What happened on the next play? He bulldozed right over 2 linemen and did it again for the safety that was upheld. The Oregon coach approached him at the end of the game and said he was the best D-linemen he's ever seen.

OUTSTANDING player at the college level, just like Padron for high school. And with the same "ceiling" labels from the NFL scouts that you're quick to put on this LB kid. I can't tell you how many scouting reports I read that year that said the exact same words: "Maxed out".

I know as a UNT fan you'd take a step back and really admit that you hope this kid succeeds here (and I believe you would); just don't be so narrow-sighted. Take a step back, appreciate all the kids that want to represent Dodge and UNT and give their all.

Young was drafted by the Rams in the FIFTH round of the 2000 draft; thank God someone took a chance on him. He shattered that ceiling and has continued to grow and mature as a lineman, earning his way up first as a nickle/dime package player to where he is now: full time starter as DT for the New Orleans Saints.

The "ceiling" thing is just as tired as the Rivals star-rankings. Unfounded, and short-sighted.

In fact, check out his (Young's) bio here and you'll find some striking parallels with the Padron kid. I certainly hope the best for Justin and his future. He seems of the highest quality, much like Young.

Cobb is a freshman RB out of Pflugerville.

I know I've watched him play the past two years and he's one of the best LB's in HS I've seen play, ever! And he's nearly a clone coming out of HS to that of #55 of the Jets when he came out of HS, only Padron is faster getting to the ball. He has the perfect mindset and attitude you want for the LB position. He was most times in the correct position to make the play and the two coaches most responsible for helping him learn that will be with him the next four years. Does any of this mean he will be the next Brad Kassell at NT? No. It means out of HS he has the potential to be that good, or better, and that's all anyone can ask for.

Good deal. I'm glad to hear from someone that saw him play rather than a bunch of panic from people just based on his size/speed.

That's a great post. He was all-state and captain on a state championship team (when's the last time we could say that about a new recruit?). He may end up being a bust, but he has a hell of a lot of potential.
