Euless Trinity DE says he'll play for SMU

12:27 PM CST on Sunday, January 7, 2007

By TODD WILLS / The Dallas Morning News

Euless Trinity defensive end Youri Yenga, SportsDay’s 2006 Defensive Player of the Year, said Sunday morning that he has orally committed to SMU.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit in the Class of 2007 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 7.

SMU’s Sunday haul didn’t stop there. Mexia offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum Jr. (6-3, 260) and Denton Ryan defensive end Ben Goldthorpe (6-3, 240) also said that they committed to the Mustangs after taking officials visits over the weekend.

Yenga (6-2, 210) said he picked the Mustangs over UT-El Paso and North Texas. He wanted to choose an area school, where he could showcase his talents. “I’ll see what happens,” Yenga said.

Yenga, who grew up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, had 111 tackles this season, including 17 tackles for losses and 7 ½ sacks.

Of course, some of these kids pick one school over other schools who have long lost interest in said player, too, with some of those schools who never offered in the first place. :) Guess it happens to everyone, though.

And FWIW........Denton Ryan seems to have become a mini-pipeline for SMU lately, eh?
