DENTON (12/22/06) – Senior Calvin Watson scored a season-high 27 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 94-70 victory against Jarvis Christian on Friday afternoon in the Super Pit.

The Mean Green is now 9-3 overall and 1-0 against Jarvis Christian.

“I thought this win was good for us,” said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. “We got off to a good start, and this one really served a purpose. It gives us a nice break between conference games, and I thought we played pretty well.”

Watson led five players in double figures. Quincy Williams followed with 15 points. The junior has scored at least nine points in the last five games. Senior Rich Young added 11 points, and Ben Bell and Michael Sturns posted 10 points each.

North Texas raced out to an early lead and did not look back. Williams scored four of NT’s first seven points to give the Mean Green a 7-2 lead. After a Justin Howerton steal, Bell scored on the fast break to extend the lead, 11-2. Six of the 11 Mean Green points were from turnovers and six came off fast breaks.

The Mean Green went on to force 18 Jarvis turnovers in the game and score 16 points off fast breaks.

Young and Watson started a 10-0 run by hitting back-to-back three pointers to push the score to 27-14. Sturns capped the run with a dunk to put NT ahead by 17 points, 31-14, with 10:34 left in the first half.

Jarvis cut the lead to nine points, 37-28, but the Mean Green responded with a 9-2 run. Watson ended the first half with his third three-pointer of the game to give the Mean Green a 46-30 lead.

The Mean Green finished the game with seven three-pointers, including four by Watson.

North Texas increased the score in the second half. The Mean Green took a 20-point lead, 54-34, after an 8-4 run to start off the second half.

The Mean Green shot 54.1 percent from the field, compared to Jarvis Christians’ 36.2 percent.

With his two blocks in the game, Williams passed Ronnie Morgan for 12th place on the school’s all-time block list. As a team, the Mean Green tied a season best with seven blocks.

The Mean Green returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 28 when it plays Belhaven at home at 7 pm.
