When I hear people ask why Dodge would take the UNT job I think what that says about the image they still have of UNT football. Even after DD's 4-Bowl-trips, forever-SBC league champs, SMUt-beating seasons, nobody thought us any better for it.

By Dodge just taking the job he has actually elevated our image and legitimized us above where it was with DD. We can only get better from here. (And while we're at it, a new stadium would greatly help our image too!!)

The fact the number 1 voice of NT football the last nine years, the ex coach, has promoted the "poor little NT concept" at every opportunity has definitely helped to develop or solidify the negative image of NT that is being portrayed by many sports pundits.

OK...so under the same logic, would that be a demotion to leave, say, being the head coach at USC, or UT, or FSU, or UF (take your pick) to become the head coach at the Houston Texans of the NFL?????

My point here is that the NFL is still the next level up, and even if you are leaving the BEST college team to coach the WORST NFL team it is still the next level up, a new challenge, and (more importantly here) NOT a demotion.

Look at Steve Spurrier...

Nick Saban is another example of a college coach going to the NFL. Saban is a better measuring stick since he has had some NFL coaching experience, much like Dodge has had some college coaching experience.

Respond smart, not mad. Invite Ms. Engels (is that her name?) to Denton for a visit. She obviously has not seen our new facilities, nor does she realize that there is really school spirit at UNT on occasion. She could be invited to tour the athetic center and attend a game of Dodge ball, and she might be impressed enough to give us some positive publicity in her column. If she's smart, she will publically acknowledge her mistake.

I can't stand this chick. She is the sole reason I quit listening to 103.3. I just wonder if she learned what she knows about football by studying it or just watching it? I don't think she has ever been a coach, player, or even an athletic trainer. Who gives her the right to be the sports brain that she claims to be?

I guess the Rice OC job would have been a demotion too, seeing as how they got waxed by little old Troy.

Why does any coach WANT to change jobs? The challange of progressing at the next level or a new school. How many people work at the same job they had as a High School teenager? Why did Spurrier leave Florida for the Washington Redskins? (that promotion doesn't always work out) Why did Saben leave LSU for Miami Dolphins?

I guess Jennifer totally missed the point. This is an opportunity for Dodge to show he can coach at the next level and be sucessful. He has done about all he can in high school. If he were content with that, then he should have stayed at SLC.

A demotion? In her defense, there are times you take a "lesser" job to get to a better one. I do not expect Dodge to be sucessful right off. I don't expect NT to win the SBC in 2007. I expect some progress but not a quantum leap till maybe 2008. In that respect, the NT job might be considered a "lesser job" to her. But in the grand scheme this is definately a promotion.

And when Dodge shows some sucess over the next 3-5 years, we will be going through this coach search dance again.
