Former NFL QB Harbaugh to interview at UNT

San Diego head coach will talk to UNT officials within next two days

University of San Diego head football coach Jim Harbaugh will interview with North Texas for its opening for a head coach within the next two days, multiple sources familiar with the situation said Tuesday.

"This is a situation where you have to look at everyone who has an interest," UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said. "We continue to narrow the pool down and gauge people's interest. There are people who have shown interest that we are still gathering information on. We want to be thorough."

Villarreal declined to identify who is a candidate for the job and would not comment specifically on Harbaugh, who spent 15 seasons as an NFL quarterback.

Harbaugh has been San Diego's head coach for the last three seasons. Before taking over at San Diego, he spent two seasons as the Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach.

The former Michigan quarterback was an NCAA-certified unpaid assistant coach at Western Kentucky for his father, Jack, during his final eight NFL seasons (1994-2001).

Harbaugh has led USD to Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championships in each of the last two seasons.

USD does not have athletic football scholarships and competes against other non-scholarship I-AA schools.

Harbaugh's success at USD has attracted the attention of several Division I-A programs. He has been a candidate for head coaching jobs at Rice, Temple, Iowa State and San Diego State.

UNT is looking to replace former head coach Darrell Dickey, who was fired in the middle of his ninth season with the Mean Green on Nov. 8.

Several Division I assistant coaches have expressed interest in the job, including Georgia Tech running backs coach Curtis Modkins

South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix talked with Villarreal about the job but later pulled out of the running.

Southlake Carroll head coach and former UNT offensive coordinator Todd Dodge said he would talk with UNT officials about the job after the Dragons’ season that was extended another week on Saturday with a win over Odessa Permian.

Southlake will play Colleyville Heritage on Saturday in the Class 5A Division I state quarterfinals.

This is some great work by Vito. This article was a great example of investigative reporting, finding the stroy that hadn't broke yet.......or regurgitating whatever Harry posts in the morning and passing it off as a newspaper article.

Where is Tim McM when we need him to find out what's really going on. Vito is just frosting, no cake.
