A gray-haired 62-year-old with a master's degree in pediatric dentistry and a doctorate in educational psychology normally wouldn't come off as the most powerful person on a football field.

But here was Bernie Machen, president of the University of Florida, moments after his Gators won the SEC championship Saturday at the Georgia Dome, throwing out the most important bit of news of the college football weekend – he is going to fight for a new championship season.

"We need a playoff," Machen said . . . Machen perhaps is the most powerful person ever to make that statement, let alone promise to champion its cause.

Playoffs need a proponent, and it can't come from the coaching ranks or the media. It can't be a simple fan or even a television executive waving billions in broadcast rights. This thing has to be changed from within, and that means president to president, Ph.D. to Ph.D.

He told The Gainesville Sun he already has discussed playoff ideas with Florida State president T.K. Wetherell, who has also recently pledged support.

Wow, that would be huge but he will have a hard time convincing the other presidents to hand over their power to their AD's, which is exactly what a playoff will do. But I'm all for it. Rock On!

Once the other AD's see their school wallow at the middle of the pack or lower for a few seasons, they will jump all over a playoff. I'm sure Miami will follow Florida St., etc...

Got to disagree.

If you are AD at Kentucky, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Kansas, Missouri, or Oklahoma State you know the odds of having a team that can make an 8 or even 16 team playoff field is slim but you always have the bowls. Even if the bowls survive a playoff the measure of success will be making the playoff field.

#1. you aren't going to favor any system that gives all conferences an automatic berth to all conferences because you don't want Troy and Central Michigan in a playoff while you are in the surviving bowls.

#2. You aren't going to favor a system that raises the profile of the conference teams you compete against even more because that puts you even further behind.

If a 16 team playoff were adopted and if no change is made to current NCAA rules regarding playoffs you would get a playoff that has 8 automatic berths (assigned prior to the season based on prior year ranking of the conferences because auto berths cannot be more than half the field) and would have 8 at-large slots.

So you would probably had auto berths for ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, CUSA, Mountain West, Pac-10 and SEC this year based on last year's rankings.

The playoff field would look like this using the BCS rankings (seed next to name)

Automatic berths

(15) BYU

(2) Florida

(16) Houston

(6)Louisville

(1) Ohio State

(10) Oklahoma

(5)USC

(14) Wake Forest

At-Large

(12) Arkansas

(9) Auburn

(8) Boise State

(4) LSU

(3) Michigan

(11) Notre Dame

I can guarantee you won't see a 16 team playoff. The most you would see is an 8 team playoff.

Here's my opinion on what would work:

There's almost a month between the end of the season and the 1st bowl game. Each college team is allowed 1 bye week as well. They can do away with the bye or force all teams to start the season on the same date. Week 1 in college football only has 10 or so teams playing every year.

16-Team playoff

Cut the season to a mandatory 11 games.

Force EVERY conference to hold a title game.

These Conference Champs get automatic bids:

SEC, PAC10, ACC, Big10, Big12, & Big East.

These Conference Champs play it out for 2 Auto Bids:

SunBelt vs MWC

WAC vs MAC

Remaining 8 positions determined through a system similar to the BCS.

From opening day, to conference title week, to National Championship, the entire college season should take 17 weeks. That would put the season within the same time frame the current system uses. The only difference is there is no layover from the end of the season to the 1st bowl game on mid December.

Just think of the potential money to be made from a playoff. Millions of dollars per game which can then be shared by conference mates. If the money is big enough, which I'm certain it will be, everyone benefits.

In a sense, yes it would be. However, if a playoff did come into effect, I can gaurantee you conference shuffling would take place to allow for a title game.

Woopsie, slight oversite.

Move the MWC up to Autobid with the Sunbelt, MAC, WAC, & CUSA left to play for 2 autobids. Sort of like the "Play-In" game the NCAA Hoops tourney uses for the 64th spot.

I don't think so. By mandating conference championship games, you essentially double the size of the playoff field, giving more teams a shot at the playoffs.
