LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will interview for the North Texas job this weekend, I'm told. Fisher also has been mentioned for the openings at N.C. State and Arizona State.

Georgia Tech running backs coach Curtis Modkins might have a chance at his first head coaching job, plus a chance to get back to his Texas roots. Modkins worked on the same Texas Christian staff with North Texas athletics director Rick Villarreal, who is looking to hire a replacement for Darrell Dickey. The Division I-A school won four consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships from 2001-04 but has had back-to-back losing seasons.

USC defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said Thursday that he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the North Texas coaching vacancy. Nix, who joined the Gamecocks’ staff in 2005 after 10 seasons at his alma mater of Southern Miss, did not interview for the North Texas position. The 34-year-old Nix was contacted this month after the Sun Belt school announced it was firing Darrell Dickey at the end of the season. The Mean Green finished 3-9 in Dickey’s final season.
