The tennis team is building a strong foundation, beginning with the growth of the current players. Schmulbach, Aba Butain and Franca have all shown marked improvement this fall. Giles and Moreton will be missed if their injuries prevent them from playing in the spring. Noriega will be a strong addition to the team in the spring, as she was top five in Peru last year. She is a fighter with a big game.

a DII transfer will add to the team's strength as will a nice "find" on campus.

The signees for the fall '07 is arguably the best class of recruits UNT has had. One or more of them could break into the nat'l rankings next year.

The team has a bright future - enjoy the ride girls - should be fun! rolleyes.gif

who would be the DII transfer? and the walk-on from campus.

You can PM if you would like.

I love the new recruiting class. Should be great start to build on for years to come.

Anybody bothered by all the foreigners getting scholarships paid for by Texas taxpayers?  This was coach Sue's history before coming to UNT.

In a word no it does not bother me, look at almost any college tennis team and all you see is foreigners. I would be for a NCAA rule that would curtail the numbers of non-citizens that could be given ships, however if it is within the rules than a coach must do what is best for the team.

If you look at non-revenue sports in the Belt, many of the championship teams are winning because of foreign athletics. NT would be at a big disadvantage if they did not use foreign players and I'm happy NT is doing whatever is necessary to be highly competitive.

What Lama has done is split the team 50/50.

You can not win at the D1 level with only American players.

Besides the Braizilian currently on the team played at a JUCO in KS. There will be 2 TX next year, 1-NV.

So i short no it does not bother me if it get UNT onto the map possibly into the Top 50. It is just the changing of the times.

On a side in my three years of coaching it was pretty obvious that the foreign players took the sport much more serious. We had 3 Czechs, 1 from Mexico, 2 fron Quebec, 1-Australia. Not always of course but the foreign players tended to work harder on the court and in the class room, so if this is what Lama brings in then I have no problem with tax dollars going to these scholarships rather than to players who will flunk out in 1-2 years or quit caring about tennis once their Jr/Sr year rolls around.

Having foreign players does not bother me one bit. I want to win at every sport at NT. Look at Baylor men's team. Do they even have an american? They play for the national title every year.

Most national golf powers have at least 2 foreign players on their rosters.

What ever it takes GET THE JOB DONE!!

Win at any cost? Foreign professionals? Taxpayers and american players be damned? Foreigners with better work ethic? What a bunch of crap. The german girl didn't have the grades to be on the team this year. The truth is that coaches bring in foreigners because the coach is lazy. It takes a lot more competitive effort to recruit a good american player. Biggest risk with the foreigners is whether they get off the plane and show up. If the coach turns out to be a bum, american players are't as easily controlled.

ok so I guess Baylor is lazy, UT is lazy, TAMU is lazy, Duke is lazy, OU, Nebraska, UALR --- practicaly every team in the Top 75 in the nation has a bunch of lazy coaches because they recruit foriegn players.

You can not win today with all american players unless you get 6 Top 100 National Recruits, the closest is Stanford and Vanderbilt who is all American but they are the exception and they have Top 50 National players. I do not see any top 50 National Players coming to UNT anytime soon.

So because one foreign player does not make the grades all of them are the same.

Yeah um nice argument dry.gif

My experience is that you have to get a national reputation as a good tennis team first...then you can recruit better American talent. Also, most really good American players do not complete their college career, but turn pro before using up their eligibility. Our best bet is to try to get our name out with a good team (with foreign players if that is all we can attract now) and then hope we can attract more good solid American players later. If not, we need to stay competitive by recruiting the foreign players.

I think a lot of people are looking towards the future too much. The team is led by Schmulbach which is going to have a great spring if the fall indicated anything, and the whole team has stepped up their game with the hard work attitude of team leader Schmulbach.

Megan is a great Sr. leader unfortunately she will have to play #1 when she ideally should be at #2 or 3. I hope Coach Lama gets the Peruvian Girl eligible for the Spring so they can field a full team. What is the news of S. Moreton and Giles are they healthy yet?

This year could be a long season but next year should be great. The coaches will do a good job regardless of W/L's
