North Texas narrowing search for football coach

Two rumored candidates for the North Texas football coaching job had different takes on the subject Tuesday.

Carroll High School coach Todd Dodge said he has neither been contacted by North Texas nor has he initiated contact. Dodge, 43, has repeatedly said he won't interview or look at an opening until Carroll's season is finished.

"I haven't had official contact with them," Dodge, a UNT assistant in 1992 and '93, said of the school and UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal. "I've had my head stuck in the sand with this team. I don't even consider myself a candidate. We have not met."

South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix did not deny being contacted by UNT, saying, "I don't talk about what other people have done. You'll have to ask [Villarreal] all that stuff."

Villarreal would not comment on possible candidates, only to say the list of coaches "has been trimmed down to a fairly small size."

Spoke with someone somewhat close to the situation and I can tell you that if the information is correct, we are a ways off from a coach being hired. Nix has been contacted because a certain amount of minority coaches have to be contacted. Nix makes almost twice as much at SC than he would be making here.
