North Texas contacted Chambers

Earlier this month, North Texas officials made informal contact with Texas about the possibility of interviewing Bruce Chambers, the Longhorns' longtime assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, for the Mean Green's head coaching vacancy.

But it's unclear whether there is interest between the two sides anymore.

Chambers was a four-year letter winner at North Texas, earning his degree in 1982. He was a head coach at Dallas Carter High School, then was hired for coach Mack Brown's initial staff at Texas in 1998.

Whether or not we hire Chambers or not, I am pleased that we contacted a former letterman and alum who has been successful as a coach at the highest level of college football. We haven't always treated our alums as well as we should have and RV deserves a lot of credit for reaching out and making them feel at home again at NT.

Think about this, we could probably fill up 1/4 of the stadium with former lettermen! They are a tremendous asset that we need to develop!

This snippet also illustrates the difference between 'official contact', and 'informal contact'.

Chambers and Villareal could plausibly say "I have not spoken with him." or "There has been no official contact from either party." or "There were never serious discussions about it." should questions be asked, yet contact was made to gauge interest.

To me, it's telling that this is now public.
