DENTON (11/27/06) -- North Texas softball head coach Kelly Burns announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Monday. The entire class hails from the state of Texas.

"We are very proud of this class," said Burns. "We have added depth and strength on the mound as well as power and consistency to the batting order. All four of these athletes are strong and consistent, bringing power and speed to our lineup."

For the 2007-08 school year, the signing class includes the following players: Courtney Bradshaw (C, Mineola HS/Mineola, Texas), Mallory Cantler (P/1B, Jarrell HS/Jarrell, Texas), Mariza Martinez (OF, Deer Park HS/Pasadena, TX) and Jennifer Smith (P, Ross S. Sterling HS/Baytown, TX).

Courtney Bradshaw

Bradshaw was named a Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Catcher and the District 13-3A Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. Through three years of varsity ball at Mineola HS, Bradshaw posted a .472 batting average with 125 hits and 77 RBI. The two-time captain was named her team’s MVP in 2005 and 2006 and the District 13-3A MVP as a sophomore. In 2005, the catcher was part of a district championship after advancing to the regional quarterfinals as a freshman.

"Courtney brings a strong arm behind the plate and a powerful bat to the Mean Green," said Burns.

Mallory Cantler

Cantler was named first-team all-state as a junior after serving as a double threat in the pitching circle and at the plate. Through three years of varsity ball at Jarrell High School, Cantler posted a .573 batting average with 49 doubles and 12 home runs. In the circle, Cantler posted a 46-24 overall record with 887 strikeouts. As a sophomore, she was named District 25-2A Offensive MVP and received Williamson County First Team honors the last two years. Cantler also received Williamson County and District 25-2A Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman.

"Mallory will help us out in the power department of our hitting lineup as well," said Burns. "She will also bring depth to the mound and first base."

Mariza Martinez

Martinez was named first-team all-district as a junior at Deer Park High School. The outfielder received second-team all-district honors in 2005 and was a part of two district championships.

"Mariza adds much needed speed as a consistent outfielder," said Burns. "She will be a capable lead-off hitter as well as a steal threat."

Jennifer Smith

Smith received first-team all-district honors as a sophomore and junior at Ross S. Sterling HS in Baytown, Texas. The pitcher recorded a career ERA of .381 and a 1.91 strikeout per inning average. Smith was also named second-team all-district as a freshman.

"We are excited to add Jennifer to our pitching roster," said Burns. "She will add both power and depth to our rotation. As an added bonus she also brings a big bat to our batting order as well. "

Looks like some good talent. They should also consider some local girls... Weatherford, Mansfield, Aledo, and Granbury all have very strong ASA league teams with some great talent.
